Warm Up (10 mins)

Organization

  • 15x15 yard grid
  • Mannequin/pole in the middle of grid to act as defender.
  • Players split into 4 corners (two teams), 2 corners with collection of balls.

Activity

Play starts with red on one side, who plays the ball across to the blue player (1). Blue receives and begins to dribble towards centre. Red player who started move will overlap to blue player in possession and receive pass back from that player (2). Red player will then pass into the red player on the other side and join that line. Blue dribbler will join the blue line on opposite side (3). Play starts with red player who received the pass from the overlapper and sequence repeats.

Coaching Points

  • Strength of pass/service into teammate - don't under-hit the pass
  • Receive on the back foot to drive the next touch and movement forward
  • Speed of overlap to increase tempo and effectiveness
  • Pass into the overlapping player's path not to feet

SSG1 (20 mins)

Organization

  • 35 x 35 yard grid (adjust based on numbers), goals at both ends.
  • 5 yard channels on either side (effective playing space is 25x35)
  • 2 teams, one ball

Activity

Teams look to score on opponents. Players can move into the channel for an overlapping run after making pass into teammate. Only the player who initiated the move can enter channel. No defenders allowed. Goals can only be scored if an overlap was part of the attacking move. Players cannot wait in the channel.

Progression: One defender can enter the channel

Coaching Points

  • Attacking Principles of Play (specifically: Dispersal, Penetration, Movement)
  • Strength of pass/service into teammate - don't under-hit the pass
  • Receive on the back foot to drive the next touch and movement forward
  • Speed of overlap to increase tempo and effectiveness
  • Pass into the overlapping player's path not to feet
  • Play around the defenders to open up space to play through them.

Activity (20 mins)

Organization

  • 15x20 yard grid
  • Flat marker/pole in the centre, mini-goal at the end
  • Attacker on the flat marker, partner in the corner of the grid with ball, defender and the goal

Activity

Attacker A1 plays the ball into A2, who is moving off the flat marker towards the pass and looks to receive side-on towards goal. Defender (D) moves towards A2 to gain possession. A1 looks to overlap and create 2v1 opportunity and score on the goal. If defender wins the ball, they dribble to the end line to score.

Progression - Add a defender

Coaching Points

  • Strength of pass/service into teammate - don't under-hit the pass
  • Move to the ball to start the move and gain extra space and time
  • Receive on the back foot to drive the next touch and movement forward
  • Take the defender on - force them to decide to mark space or the ball
  • Speed of overlap to increase tempo and effectiveness
  • Pass into the overlapping player's path not to feet
  • A2 looks to follow up the overlapping pass to continue forcing defender to choose either marking ball or space
