Description

AFC Ladies 1st team session. Attacking Play in final 3rd in 4-3-3 formation (Working with GKs, CAM, Striker and Wingers)

Coaching points/learning objectives for Attacking Players

  • Scanning (See triggers to begin movement and identify spaces)
  • Timing of runs, quick approach but set to strike upon arrival; quality of finishing (Technical points if needed)
  • Use of double movements i.e. Striker stepping back then running across CB or CAM running into box to move opponent deep then dropping off into space to strike
  • Intelligent runs to create space for others i.e. Striker dragging CBs to front post
  • Opposite winger holding position as long as possible to stretch defence horizontally (Opens gaps for team mates to exploit i.e. late arriving midfielder)
  • Anticipating rebounds!

     

    Coaching points/learning objectives for Goalkeeper

  • Realistic positions (vertically and horizontally) throughout practices (stepping up as ball distributed and dropping deeper as situation evolves)

  • Decision making- attack cross or drop deep? Decision made early and communicated effectively. Choice of technique punch/ catch/ parry
  • Technical efficiency in dealing with crosses, shots and distributing ball at varied distances
  • Transitional Movement after cross (to start attacking counter)

Cut Back Movement (Technical Practice))

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • Coach feeding ball
  • Set up with 2 mannequins to represent CB
  • Set up with CAM, Striker and Winger

Instructions/Explanations:

  • Coach bounces ball or shifts ball out of feet (Players see visual to trigger attacking movement)
  • Coach can feed to any attacking player for finish on goal (2 touch max)
  • If GK holds ball, react with break away movement i.e. a few steps out as if to trigger attacking transition

Game Related Cut Back scenarios

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • 4 Mannequins to represent opposition back 4
  • LW and RW maximising width
  • Striker occupying 2x CBs
  • Coach as CAM 

Instructions/Explanations:

  • Ball starts with GK taking goalkick (Striking practice for GK as identified development area)
  • GK distributes through or over attacking line t0 CM who can move to create passing line
  • CM can then combine with striker and wingers to create cut back scenarios

     

  • Option 1: CM plays to winger who drops deep to receive ball drives to by line and cuts back (shown on right)

     

  • Option 2: CM plays to winger who is wide on touch line and makes run to cut in behind opposition full back. Can then cut back or strike 1v1 with depending on angle (shown on left)

     

  • Option 3: CM plays to winger who has arced run to cut between full back and CB. Can then cut back or strike 1v1 with depending on angle (shown on left)

     

  • Option 4: Striker can drop deep to pull CB out of position. Can then play wide or set for CM to play wide before spinning into box for cut back. Progression: Striker can turn and face up to strike (As if CBs stayed deep and left striker to drop into space)

 

Progression(s)

  • Striker face up on the half turn play forward/ strike (As if CBs stayed deep and left striker to dropped into space and receive from CM)
  • Passage starts by receiving pass back (wingers double up as full backs in possession and then switch as CM intercepts ball and possession is lost)

Wide and Deep Crosses

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • 2 wingers, Striker, GK and CAM
  • 2 mannequins to represent opposition CBs/ fullback

Instructions/Explanations:

  • GK takes a cross from one of the wingers (Passive Rep)
  • GK can then distribute to full back to turn and play to CM or straight to CM
  • CM then plays to either winger to cross from wide
  • Winger can vary angles for cross i.e. ranging from by line to edge of 18 yard box
  • CM can then support winger for them to play back to for deeper cross (replicating winger cross being shut off so they pass back to full back for first time cross from deep)
  • Striker and opposite winger attacking crosses

 

Progression(s)

  • CM can link up with striker for shot on goal

Instructions/Explanations:

  • Ball starts with CAM
  • All attacking combinations possible
  • Striker dropping to receives (turn and strike; set for CAM to strike for first time round corner for winger)
  • Striker running across CB
  • Striker running in behind
  • Winger cutting between CB and full back or behind full back for 1v1

4 Ball Shooting Challenge

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • End of session finishing activity
  • 4 balls set up around width of 18 yard box
  • Cone for player to reset around

Instructions/Explanations:

  • Player has 1 touch strike and must reset around cone before next strike
  • Can shoot in any order
  • 1 point per goal
  • Competition between attacking players to see who can score highest

Progression(s)

  • Other players set ball for striker instead of dead ball strike (2 touch finishing limit)
