Defending ( technical practice ) (20 mins)

Defending ( Technical practice )

Key focus

  • Defensive Stance: Maintain a low, balanced stance with knees slightly bent.
  • Delaying: Stay patient and avoid diving in; aim to slow the attacker’s progress.
  • Positioning: Keep the body positioned to block forward movement while guiding the attacker to a less dangerous area.
  • Footwork: Stay light on toes, adjusting feet quickly to mirror the attacker’s movements.
  • Awareness: Maintain focus on the ball and the attacker’s hips, avoiding distractions.
  • Organization: Olcott (1968)

    • Area: 15x10 yards per station.
    • Players: 8 players split into 4 pairs, one pair per station.
    • Equipment: 8 markers, 4 footballs.
    Mechanics of defending
    • Get in line with the ball
    • Pressure on the ball
    • Deceleration
    • Body position
    • Stay on toes
    • Be patient
    • Decision to win the ball
    Technical Session (20 Minutes)
    • Each pair faces each other with one ball.
    • The player with the ball passes to their partner and runs toward them to act as the defender.
    • The receiving player carries the ball slowly, allowing the defender to practice defensive basics: delaying, positioning, and footwork
    • After a few repetitions, roles are switched.

    Progression and Regression . McKeag ( 2005 )

    Progression

    • Increase Attacker Speed: The attacker increases the pace of movement while still allowing the defender to practice fundamentals.
    • Add Direction Changes: The attacker includes feints and slight direction changes to challenge the defender’s footwork.
    • Time Constraint: Limit the time for the defender to guide the attacker to a specific marker or area.

    Regression

    • Slower Movement: Reduce the speed of the attacker’s ball carry to allow defenders to focus on form.
    • No Direction Changes: Keep the attacker moving in a straight line to simplify defensive positioning.
    • Coach-Led Demonstration: Show and guide the players through proper defensive techniques before restarting the drill.

    Coaching Process

    • Observation Phase (4 Minutes)

      • Allow pairs to perform the drill uninterrupted.
      • Observe the defender’s stance, footwork, and ability to delay effectively.
    • Feedback Phase (4 Minutes)

      • Provide individual feedback on defensive stance and positioning.
      • Highlight the importance of staying patient and not committing too early.
    • Challenge Phase (8 Minutes)

      • Introduce progression elements, such as attacker feints or time constraints.
      • Encourage defenders to adjust quickly to attacker movements and maintain balance.
    • Reflection Phase (4 Minutes)

      • Conduct a brief discussion on what worked well and areas for improvement.
      • Ask players reflective questions, such as:
        • "How did you manage to stay balanced while defending?"
        • "What helped you guide the attacker to the desired area?"

    Defending (skill practice )

    Key focus

    • Defender:

      • Defensive Stance: Stay low, balanced, and ready to adjust.
      • Delaying: Slow down the attacker without diving in.
      • Positioning: Angle the body to guide the attacker away from the goals.
      • Slightly bend the knee
      • Eyes on the ball
      • Should be on toes .

    Organization

  • Area: 15x10 yards with two mini-goals placed on the end line, 5 yards apart.
  • Players: 8 players in pairs (4 attackers and 4 defenders).
  • Equipment: 4 markers, 2 footballs, and 2 mini-goals.

  • Mechanics of defending
    • Get in line with the ball
    • Pressure on the ball
    • Deceleration
    • Body position
    • Stay on toes
    • Be patient
    • Decision to win the ball

  • Skill Session (20 Minutes)
    • Each pair takes turns.
    • The defender passes the ball to the attacker and runs towards him to defend.
    • The attacker starts with the ball and aims to score in either of the two mini-goals.
    • The defender attempts to delay, dispossess, or force the attacker away from the goals.
    • Rotate roles after each attempt.

    Progression and Regression .McKeag ( 2005 )

    Progression

    • Time Constraint: Limit attackers to 6 seconds to score.
    • Tighter Space: Reduce the area to challenge ball control and defending.
    • Directional Gates: Add conditions, such as scoring in a specific goal based on coach instructions.

    Regression

    • Passive Defending: Defenders apply light pressure to allow attackers to focus on their moves.
    • Larger Area: Increase the space to give attackers more room to maneuver.
    • Guided Play: Provide attackers with specific moves to execute before scoring.

    Coaching Process

    • Observation Phase (4 Minutes)

      • Allow free play to observe player tendencies and decision-making.
      • Focus on how attackers choose their goal and defenders position themselves.
    • Feedback Phase (4 Minutes)

      • Provide concise feedback, emphasizing key factors such as control, direction changes, and defensive positioning.
      • Use demonstrations to clarify proper techniques or strategies.
    • Challenge Phase (8 Minutes)

      • First 4 Minutes: Introduce a time limit for attackers to score.
      • Next 4 Minutes: Rotate pairs and increase defender intensity.
    • Reflection Phase (4 Minutes)

      • Conduct a brief discussion to reinforce key learning points.
      • Ask reflective questions

    Defending (SSG) (20 mins)

    • Key Factors:
    • Defensive Positioning:
      • Stay goal-side of the attacker.
      • Maintain a low, balanced stance with knees bent and weight on the balls of the feet.
    • Jockeying:
      • Delay the attacker by keeping a safe distance.
      • Control the pace and force the attacker into less threatening areas.
    • Timing:
      • Know when to tackle versus when to delay.
      • Wait for the attacker to make a mistake or lose control of the ball.
    • Communication:
      • Verbally coordinate with teammates for cover and support.
      • Signal defensive actions, such as stepping up or holding the line.

    organization  Olcott (1968)

  • Area size: 25x20 yards.
  • Two mini-goals at each end.
  • Divide players into two teams of 4 (4v4 format)
  • Skill Session (20 Minutes):

    • Initial Phase (6 Minutes):

      • Standard 4v4 with defenders focused on staying compact and forcing attackers wide.
      • No scoring unless the ball is carried through the gate.
    • Progression (8 Minutes):

      • Add time pressure for attackers to score within 10 seconds of entering the final third.
      • Reward defenders with points for dispossessing attackers or forcing them out of bounds.
    • Challenge Phase (6 Minutes):

      • Attackers get an extra point for dribbling past a defender before scoring.
      • Defenders earn double points for intercepting and transitioning to attack.

    Progression:

    • Reduce the area size to increase pressure on defenders.
    • Add a neutral player to create overloads and force defenders to make quicker decisions.
    • Introduce a scoring zone where attackers must carry the ball before shooting.

    Regression:

    • Increase the area size to give defenders more time to react.
    • Allow defenders to double-team attackers for added support.
    • Remove the time limit for attackers to score.

    Mechanics of defending

    • Get in line with the ball
    • Pressure on the ball
    • Deceleration
    • Body position
    • Stay on toes
    • Be patient
    • Decision to win the ball

    Coaching Process (20 Minutes):

    • Observation Phase (4 Minutes):

      • Observe defenders’ positioning, communication, and decision-making.
    • Feedback Phase (4 Minutes):

      • Pause the game briefly to provide corrective feedback on defensive techniques (e.g., jockeying, tackling).
    • Challenge Phase (8 Minutes):

      • Introduce specific conditions, such as attackers only being able to use one side of the pitch or defenders earning extra points for effective interceptions.
    • Reflection Phase (4 Minutes):

      • Gather players to discuss defensive successes and areas for improvement.
      • Ask reflective questions, such as:
        • "How did your positioning help delay the attacker?"
        • "What could you do better to prevent the attacker from scoring?"
