Description

Session Objectives:

Technical 1)
In this session I aim to - improve players ability and awareness to play quick and accurate passes within 5-15m distances that allow their teammates to maintain possession effectively under pressure. Have a focus on the Mechanics of Passing: (Decide on target before receiving ball), Angle of approach - if necessary correct position of ball in front of you, planted foot next to ball, lower center of gravity, lock ankle, choose surface of foot(technique), contact ball and follow through kicking action towards target.

2) Technical (Secondary)
In this session I aim to - improve players ability to control the ball close to their feet or take a touch into space. Have a focus on the Mechanics of Control (first touch) On toes, eye on ball/identify space to take touch into, get in line (body) with ball, decide and present surface of foot or body towards the ball, relax on impact.

Tactical
In this session I aim to - improve my players understanding and ability to identify an overload and make a line breaking pass.

Technical Practice (Pass Activation) (10 mins)

Practice Layout (Equipment)
  • 16m x 20m area
  • 3 Teams of 4 (3 bib colours)
  • 1 Ball per team (spare balls on corners of area for quick restarts)
  • 2 Coaches (one on outside to see holistic view or practice and one on the inside to see players mechanics close up)

Rules

  • Players are split into 3 teams of 4 (e.g. Red, Blue, Yellow)
  • Each Team has one ball to use (spare balls located outside area for quick restarts)
  • In their teams' players must move around the designated area and play passes to their teammates (same colour)
Mechanics
Focus on the following mechanics within this exercise:
  • Look at Target
  • Eye on Ball
  • Angle of Approach
  • Non-Kicking Foot alongside ball in comfortable position

Observations/Demonstrations
We are observing here to identify if/how players are:

  • keeping their head up to identify the correct player to pass the ball to (e.g. yellow to yellow)
    Mechanic - Look at Target

  • looking at the ball once they have decided where to pass to ensure they approach the ball correctly and not lose track of it
    Mechanic - Eye on Ball

  • approaching the ball so that their planted foot can be beside the ball (are they too far away or too close causing them to lean back/forwards too much?)
    Mechanic - Angle of Approach

  • planting their foot close to the ball so they have a balanced follow through (how far/close is their foot to the ball - is this disruptive to striking ball
    Mechanic - Non-Kicking Foot Planting

Demonstrate accordingly during interventions to help correct mechanics, use good player examples to demo to the group also if suitable.
Interventions
  • Players using the correct mechanics within technique
  • Players not scanning (identifying target) before passing
  • Players are not focusing on the ball during their approach
  • Players planted foot is too far away or too close to ball

Progressions/Regressions

  • Create a sequence (e.g. Yellow passes to Blue, Blue passes to Red, Red Passes to Yellow)
  • Players may only pass the ball to another player that is not the same colour as themselves (e.g. Yellow passes to Blue or Red)
Realism (U12s)
The realism for players in this exercise is gradual with each progression, during a game players will need to be cognitively active when passing the ball - they will rarely be without pressure when making a pass so while this is only a technical practice without pressure, it is still important there is an element of 'decision making' while passing the ball to help them use the mechanics correctly within the technique - identifying where to pass with looking for the correct colours adds realism to the way players may pass the ball or identify where and how to approach the pass.

Skill Practice (Creating the Overload) (15 mins)

Practice Layout (Equipment)
  • 16m x 20m area (two smaller rectangle pitches within area - 14m x 8m)
  • 2 teams on each pitch (Blue and Red) 4v2
  • Balls located at the bottom of each pitch for quick restarts and so overloaded team can start with ball
  • 2 Coaches (one on outside of either pitch to see holistic view or practice and also focus on one game each)

Rules

  • Defenders are locked in their own zone
  • Attacking Players can move freely
  • Starting Shape 1-2-1 for attackers and attack to score in one of the 2 mini-goals
  • If Defenders win the ball, they can score in big goal (2nd defender is free to move anywhere when possession is won)
Mechanics
Focus on the following mechanics within this exercise:
  • Look at Target
  • Eye on Ball
  • Angle of Approach
  • Non-Kicking Foot alongside ball in comfortable position
  • Strike the ball for straight pass with the inside of your foot
  • Contact in the ball in the middle for a firm, no bobble pass (slightly underneath if lofted pass)

Observations/Demonstrations
We are observing here to identify if/how players are:

  • keeping their head up to identify the correct player to pass the ball to (e.g. yellow to yellow)
    Mechanic - Look at Target

    Mechanic - Angle of Approach

  • planting their foot close to the ball so they have a balanced follow through (how far/close is their foot to the ball - is this disruptive to striking ball
    Mechanic - Non-Kicking Foot Planting

  • making impact with the ball - (what part of the foot is striking the ball is it the right surface for the distance of pass and angle of pass?)
    Mechanic - Strike the ball

  • ankles locked on contact with the ball, so it does not bobble or loft in the air (what is the trajectory or movement of the ball after contact?)
    Mechanic - Lock Ankle

  • Demonstrate accordingly during interventions to help correct mechanics, use good player examples to demo to the group also if suitable.
Interventions
  • Players using the correct mechanics within technique
  • Players not scanning (identifying target) before passing
  • Players are not focusing on the ball during their approach
  • Players planted foot is too far away or too close to ball
  • Players not identifying pass when teammates are an option
  • Players to get out of tight area using good ball speed and technique
  • Players able find areas to create overloads (2v1 or 3v1 etc.) using passing technique
  • Players identify (or not) a line breaking pass to take away one or more defensive lines

Progressions/Regressions

  • Remove zones,
  • Free 4v2 game
  • Make grid bigger/smaller or longer/narrower
  • 2 big goals on each side
