Session Objectives:
Technical 1)
In this session I aim to - improve players ability and awareness to play quick and accurate passes within 5-15m distances that allow their teammates to maintain possession effectively under pressure. Have a focus on the Mechanics of Passing: (Decide on target before receiving ball), Angle of approach - if necessary correct position of ball in front of you, planted foot next to ball, lower center of gravity, lock ankle, choose surface of foot(technique), contact ball and follow through kicking action towards target.
2) Technical (Secondary)
In this session I aim to - improve players ability to control the ball close to their feet or take a touch into space. Have a focus on the Mechanics of Control (first touch) On toes, eye on ball/identify space to take touch into, get in line (body) with ball, decide and present surface of foot or body towards the ball, relax on impact.
Tactical
In this session I aim to - improve my players understanding and ability to identify an overload and make a line breaking pass.

Technical Practice (Pass Activation) (10 mins)
Practice Layout (Equipment)Rules
- Players are split into 3 teams of 4 (e.g. Red, Blue, Yellow)
- Each Team has one ball to use (spare balls located outside area for quick restarts)
- In their teams' players must move around the designated area and play passes to their teammates (same colour)
MechanicsFocus on the following mechanics within this exercise:
Observations/Demonstrations
We are observing here to identify if/how players are:
- keeping their head up to identify the correct player to pass the ball to (e.g. yellow to yellow)
- looking at the ball once they have decided where to pass to ensure they approach the ball correctly and not lose track of it
- approaching the ball so that their planted foot can be beside the ball (are they too far away or too close causing them to lean back/forwards too much?)
- planting their foot close to the ball so they have a balanced follow through (how far/close is their foot to the ball - is this disruptive to striking ball
InterventionsMechanic - Look at Target
Mechanic - Eye on Ball
Mechanic - Angle of Approach
Mechanic - Non-Kicking Foot Planting
Demonstrate accordingly during interventions to help correct mechanics, use good player examples to demo to the group also if suitable.
Progressions/Regressions
- Create a sequence (e.g. Yellow passes to Blue, Blue passes to Red, Red Passes to Yellow)
- Players may only pass the ball to another player that is not the same colour as themselves (e.g. Yellow passes to Blue or Red)
Realism (U12s)The realism for players in this exercise is gradual with each progression, during a game players will need to be cognitively active when passing the ball - they will rarely be without pressure when making a pass so while this is only a technical practice without pressure, it is still important there is an element of 'decision making' while passing the ball to help them use the mechanics correctly within the technique - identifying where to pass with looking for the correct colours adds realism to the way players may pass the ball or identify where and how to approach the pass.
