Description

Aim: The participants should be able to throw Ko-uchi gari

Objectives:

1. The players need to watch the demonstration of the techniques
2. The coaches need to be clear with instructions.
3. Coaches should be able to help the players when they are struggling.

Introduction and Warmup (5 mins)

Organizational / Instructions-

Before the warm-up starts introduce what is going to be involved in the session.

  • players are going to run round the red mats rectangle and cut the corners.
  • The coach will shout touch the mat with either their left, right or both hands together.
  • The coach then shout side step facing in which they face in towards the green mats. then the coach shout side step facing out.
  • The last thing for the warm-up is they are doing a front breakfall and rolling breakfall down one side of the mat. 
  • As they come up the other side of mat they will do a back and side breakfall.

Coaching Points - 

  • keep eyes and head up so you don't run into anybody.
  • Listen to instruction so you don not get injured

Progressions / Adaptations - 

While running round the coach could say two names of the people running , the first person named has to try catch the second named person as fast as they can because they have 30 second time limit.

Uchi - komis (10 mins)

Organizational / Instructions - 

  • Players will get a partner and they will stand facing each other.
  • When the coach will shout hajime which starts they will start do throw for throw with their partners

Coaching Points

  • Keep eyes and head up so you do not bumped into another pair.
  • Once you get  thrown, get back on your feet.
  • Person throwing try to control your partner and do not let go of your grip. 

Progressions / Adaptations - When you have thrown you have 10 seconds to get your partner into a hold down

Ko-uchi gari (15 mins)

Organizational / Instructions -

  • Break your partner's balance by lifting them on  their toes
  • Stepping with your dominant foot forward between your partners toes
  • your back foot follows your first step.
  • your dominant foot then goes diagonally by behind partner's foot and sweeps off the ground. 
  • drive your partner back towards the mat while still holding onto the grip

Coaching Points

  • Beware of the space you have when throwing.
  • Keep your grip so your partner cannot roll away from you

Progressions / Adaptations

Once you have mastered the techniques try moving around with your partner and catch them on the move. The pace will pick up the more you practise

Kata gatame (10 mins)

Organizational / Instructions

  • From your partner's side, put your dominate arm around both their neck and arm furthest away 
  • Put your head on the arm so your partner cannot move away from you or in towards you to break hold down.
  • switch your legs round so you are on your stomach facing down to partner.

Coaching Points

Keep weight on partner so they cannot move away 

Progressions / Adaptations

apply pressure and squeeze your clasped hands towards your head to start the strangle or choke

Ne waza randori (10 mins)

  • Organizational / Instructions - 
  • Players will pick a partner.
  • Once they have a partner, they sit up on their knees back to back
  • when the coach shouts hajime, they have to try and get their partner on their back for kata gatame.
Coaching Points

  • Watch their spacing while fight on the group.
  • Kata gatame is the only hold down they should be going for.

Progressions / Adaptations

Use Ko-uchi gari to start off then they have to try get kata gatame without their partner rolling away or the person throwing losing their grip

Adaption for this is putting your partner in Kata gatame and have them try to escape the hold-down

Randori (5 mins)

Organizational / Instructions

  • the same partners are now trying to catch each other with any throwing technique which they score 1 every time they throw
  •  but if they use Ko-uchi gari they are award a point 3 points
  • the winner with the most points wins and moves up the ladder.
  • The person with the least within the pair moves down.

Coaching Points

  • Be aware of your spacing.
  • Once you have been thrown , go back on your feet

  • coach will lead the stretches for the muscles that was used during the session
  • after the stretches the players will fix their judo suits
