Back Post Coverage
Assign one player to guard the back post and prevent direct crosses or late runs into that area.
Near Post Coverage
Position at least one defender at the near post to block low crosses and intercept attackers making early runs.
Edge of the Box
Station a player at the top of the 18-yard box to:
Intercept cleared balls.
React to short corner routines.
Defenders in the Box
Maintain tight marking:
Stay goal-side of attackers to deny clear headers.
Alternatively, cover designated zones depending on the defensive setup.
Defensive Actions & Principles
Attack the Ball
Be aggressive when the ball is in the air—use head, chest, or feet to clear decisively.
Stay Goal-Side
Always aim to position yourself between the attacker and the goal to reduce scoring chances.
Clearances
Clear the ball high and wide to avoid immediate pressure and regain defensive shape.
Short Corner Awareness
Be alert to short corner plays and close down quickly to prevent dangerous crosses.
Counter-Attack Setup
Keep designated players high and wide after a clearance to enable fast transitions into attack.
