OBJECTIVE:
To improve a teams ability to move and interchange in the midfield unit.
WHO: central midfield unit #6, #8 & #10
WHAT: To move and interchange with each other. Read the cues and move off the other player’s movement, coach the players to think ahead of the next pass and keep move and different speeds to create space for a pass or another player to exploit.
WHERE: Midfield third
WHEN: we have the ball
WHY: Ball circulation and attacking through the middle (opposite movement, diagonal runs)
GENERAL PRINCIPLES:
* Unbalance the opponent
* Exploit area's where the opponent is unbalanced.
TEAM PRINCIPLES
* Spread out and Triangulate to create passing options
* Create numbers up between and behind the lines
* Vary the types of runs
* Play forward when possible or keep the ball.
* Create 1v1's and 2v1 situations
TEAM TASKS:
* Keep possession while looking to unbalance the opponent
* Create good angles of support ahead of the ball, to the side of the ball and behind the ball to combine
* Make runs off the ball from inside to out and outside to in
* Provide defensive balance while in the attack

INTENSITY: moderate ACIVITY TIME: 4 mins REST: 1 min INTERVALS: 4
DESCRIPTION:
* Players basically man mark their opponent
* Aim is to play from one box to the other but can play back.
* Target players cannot play to each other, but players in the middle can play back if they can’t go forward
Player Tasks:
* Players #6, #8 and #10 always looking to triangulate
* #6, #8, #10 to be playing on different lines
* (T) always looking to provide movement off the ball to support
COACHING POINTS:
Attacking Principles of Play:
1. Movement off the ball - check, change the pace of the movement
2. Penetration - passing (open up) vs dribbling. Read the intention of the defender.
3. Support play - distances and angles
4 Improvisation - rotation of midfield players
5. Speed of play.

INTENSITY: moderate ACIVITY TIME: 6 mins REST: 1 min INTERVALS: 3
DESCRIPTION:
* Set up a 10 yard channel just past the half‐way line (used as a visual guide)
* Attacking team plays (Yellow) in a 1‐3‐3‐1 (#1, #2, #3, #4, #6, #8, #10, #9).
* Defensive team plays (Black) in a 1‐2‐3‐2
* Ball starts with the attacking teams goalkeeper
* Try to play through the midfielders who continuously check in and out of the middle zone
* No restrictions are placed on the players or the zones. Normal soccer rules
Player Tasks:
* Players #6, #8 and #10 always looking to triangulate - interchanging positions
* #6, #8, #10 to be playing on different lines
* #9 always looking to provide movement off the ball to support
* #2, #3 & #4 providing defensive balance.
* #2 & #3 create numbers up on the attack
COACHING POINTS:

* 8 v 8 with both teams playing in a 1‐3‐3‐1 (#1, #2, #3, #4/5, #6, #8, #10, #9)
* Normal FIFA rules including offside

* #6, #8, #10 to be playing on different lines
* #9 always looking to provide movement off the ball to support

DESCRIPTION:
* Set up a diamond with 3 players behind each cone
* First player in line A passes across to line B and applies pressure
* Line B passes right (to line C) and moves left behind Line D
* First player in line D applies pressure to line C
* The passing pattern continues with C passing right and moving left
Progressinon:
* to play either side, but still move the opposite way.
COACHING POINTS:
1. Players need to read the cues of the defender to work out which way the first touch should go
2. Keep the ball moving quickly
3. Open body position to receive and transfer the ball
