With this progression, the triangles change. Player A works with Players c and F, while player B works with players D and E. On the coaches signal, Player A receives the ball from player C and must transfer it diagonally to player F. At the same time player B receives the ball from player D and must pass it to player E. As soon as each pass is played by A and B, they switch roles and do the same on a different diagonal lin. In a game situation, this could be receiving the ball from a defender and passing it into an attacking player.
Coaching points:
- open body shape - face receiver and see target.
- Receive the ball on the back foot and move it quickly.
- Take a new position in accordance to the next ball, not where you passed the ball last.

The last progression challenges players A and B to work together. This time they are teaming up to work the ball from one corner to the other. In the example above, player C starts by passing to player A, who has checked into a space in order to initiate a pass. Player A lays the ball off first time to player B, who has dropped back to create an angled position where they can pass into player F first time. The exercise then starts again from player E to player D. Player A and player B should always rotate roles. the mannequins are replaces by passive defenders to add some realism to the practice.
Coaching points:
- Fast movement off the ball is critical for connecting these actions to a game situation. In order to accomplish this, the movement of the central midfielders should always initiate the first pass then the movement of the first player should initiate the movement from the second player. These triggers need to be understood and perfected.
- Speed of play is a goal for this exercise so challenge players to play one touch.
- Accuracy of the final pass should not be sacrificed for speed of the exercise. Challenge players to keep the quality high.
- the weight of the pass from the outside is also important for the success of this exercise. Encourage players to play the ball with speed as this challenges them on the inside to deal with difficult balls and improve speed of play.

SSG
Red team based on 3 - 4 - 3 (wide midfield removed) midfield are in a 2
Blue team based on 4 -3 -3 (full backs removed) midfield are in a 1 and a 2.
Focus on Blue team in and out of possession
in possession - challenge 1
can we play through the deep layer and break lines in to the two 10's or the 9 to create scoring opportunities.
coaching points - can blue front 3 play high and wide to pin back red defence and make the pitch as big as possible.
can blue 10's push in to the half space between the midfield and defence forcing the 2 red midfield to lock on and leave space for the the red deep layer to break lines into the central areas. - either into a 10 who can turn and drive at the defence or the 9 dropping in and dragging a cb with him for a bounce pass and then wide players and 10s to drive into the box creating an overload in the final third.
Challenge 2 - can Deep layer get on the ball to switch play? to create space for goal scoring opportunities.
As previously blue front 3 to be high and wide. blue 10s to get beyond the red midfield - can the blue 10's move to one side of the pitch to drag red midfield away allowing the blue deep layer to switch play creating a 1v1 in wide areas.
Red team - if they won the ball then they have 10 seconds to break away and score a goal.
Blue team - out of possession
front 3 lock onto red back 3 in a man on man full press, forcing them to go long of play back to the GK.
blue 10s lock onto red midfield leaving the deep layer free to block passes in to red 9.
if the ball gets to wide red players, blue deep layer is to remain in central areas, a blue 10 will shuffle across to effect the man on the ball and the other 10 will take closet supporting player.
if wide red player is in an advanced position towards the final 3rd then the closet cb will engage and the deep layer will drop back into the covering CB position.

The exercise takes place in a 20 x 20m square with four players on the outside and two players in the middle (Deep playmaker). The players on the outside (C,D,E and F) act as servers, while players in the middle (A and B) work for 90 second sessions. There are two mannequins in the middle, which will act as markers for passes and opponents to play around.
Play begins in two triangles: Player A starts with players C and D and players B starts with E and F. On the coaches signal, player A receives the ball from player C and player B receives the ball from player F. Both A and B take one touch and move the ball across the mannequin and then transfer the ball to the third player in the triangle. After the pass, both A and B switch sides and do the same action from the other side. In a game situation this would be receiving the ball from a centre back, protecting the ball under pressure, and passing to another centre back or full back.
Coaching Points:
- Good first touch
- Playing off the foot furthest from the mannequin in order to protect the ball
- Accurate, crisp passing into servers feet.
