Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
Turning mechanics. Using different surfaces for different scenarios
Technical Tactical
Using the mechanics sufficiently in opposed and game realistic situations
Technical Physical
Short, sharp burst of acceleration when turning. Potentially having to be physical with defender. Defender sprinting to apply pressure
Technical Psychological
Not afraid to make mistakes and trying things to find out what works. Quicker decision making.
Technical Social
Verbal and non-verbal communication for receiving pass. Team Captain to keep score

Skill (15 mins)

Key factors:

  • Head up and
  • Look over shoulders, constant scanning
  • Feel the pressure if there is any, turn opposite way e.g a hand on the right shoulder should mean you should turn left
  • Correct and a variety of surface and type of turn
  • Open body position
  • Can your first touch be your turn, allowing you to determine what you want to do with the ball afterwards

Organisation:

  • Football
  • Cones
  • 4 Blue or red bibs
  • Stopwatch
  • Whistle
  • 8 players - 4 reds 4 blues - split into 2 groups of 2 in their colours
  • Mini goals
  • 25x25 area size

Skilled practice:

  • Each group will stand on a cone in there pairs but need to be opposite their same colour
  • Red team will start first and put one player in the middle
  • The ball will start on the opposite side (the side with two red players on)
  • The player in the middle will receive the pass from his team
  • Once the pass has been played the other team will use non verbal communication to decide which player goes in as a defender
  • That player will then apply pressure to the player turning in the middle
  • The goal is for the player in the middle to turn out of the pressure and score in one of the mini goals.
  • Once the player who received the ball has scored, he will join the back of the cue he originally came from.
  • The player who applied pressure will then receive the ball next and the opposition will choose who applies pressure between them.

Progressions & Regressions:

+ turn on weaker foot

+ limit touches

- passive defender

- Sequence when picking defender so player in the middle knows who's turning

+ Defender can start in the middle with player receiving

*+ scoreboard: 1 point for every goal scored
