Organisation:
Modify the 5 1v1 pitches to 2 pitches, with 1 2v2 and 2 3v3
Small goals or cones.
Each game has a ball and have balls at the side to keep play quick.
Create a half way line with flat cones
Instructions:
When a team has the ball:
- 2v2 only 1 player can pass the half way line and 1 player must remain in their half
- 3v3 only 2 players can pass the half way line and 1 player must remain in their half
- All defenders can go in both halves, but if the they win the ball a player must run into their half - think about passing lines
Attacking:
- Can the player without the ball run into the opposition half to receive the pass
- Can the player with the ball dribble into the opposition half, run to the goal or recycyle
- If the attacker loses the ball they must recover running back into their half, how quickly can they recover - main focus
Defending:
- Which player presses the attacker, which player supports his / her team mate
- If the defenders win the ball how quickly can you attack
Coaching points:
The focus is on the defending sides:
- Speed of recovery. You must run back as quickly as possible to help your team mate
- Where to run to when you recover?
- Can you run into passing lines to stop the attackers passing?
- Can you run to delay the attacker?
- How do I help and support my team mates
Progression:
Upgrade to 5v5

Organisation:
Split players into 2 teams
Create a playing are suitable for players age and numbers
Add flat markers to create shooting lines
Team are lined up either side of the goal
1 side has a full size goal with GK
1 side has mini goal with no GK
Instructions:
1. Player 1 starts with a ball RWB to opposite goal and shoots
2. When Player 1 shoots Players 2 run to attack and the coach passes the ball forward - player 1 has to recover and try and delay and defend 1v2. When Players 2 pass the shooting line they must try and score.
3. When Players 2 shoot Players 3 run to attack and Player 1 joins them - creating a 3v2 - Players 2 must try to recover and delay and defend. When players 3+1 get past the shooting line they must try and score.
This continues - once the attacking team shoots, two players run on and add to the defending team and change to the attacking team. The other team must recover back as quickly as possible to try and defend.
This is a very energetic game - take a break after each game.
Coaching Points:
Focus on transition and recovery:
- speed of recover - work rate
- can the defenders run into passing lines and then close the ball
- Look to become compact on recovery
- Can the player nearest the player with the ball close the attacker - while other defenders look to close passing lines and close down attackers
- Move into space and help your team mates score points through the gate
- Create passing lines
- Need to continue movement - don't stand still
- Positive first touch - speed of movement to the next gate
- Team without the ball - can you intercept the ball to prevent the other team from scoring
Progression:
During the final section leave the teams to continue as a match
