Description

Overview:

Topic: 1v1 Dribbling

Age: U11

Ability: Basic/Cognitive

Number of players: 12

Learning Objectives:

  • Understanding a defender's behaviours
  • Improve on dribbling technique and importance of movement emphasis
  • When and how to shift the ball to beat the defender

Organisation (Practice Layout & Transition)

Traditional Practice Layout (Technique, Skill, SSG)

Transitions mentioned in session descriptions

Technical Coaching Style:

Autocratic: Will be used in the technical session to give players certain instructions to follow and give little player freedom. This is classed as a more dictatorial way of coaching, described as 'coach-led' (Brooks, 2022)

Skill Coaching Style:

Democratic: Will be used in the skill session to give players more creativity in their decision making, particularly against an opposition. This allows players to find solutions to their own problems and 'explore through play' (Brooks, 2022)

SSG Coaching Style:

Laissez-Faire: Will be used in the SSG. This is more of a hands off approach which allows players freedom in their decisions and movements. Coaches are able to intervene at any moment if the opportunity arises. (Chapman, 2015)

Technique (15 mins)

Equipment: Balls, Cones, Flats, Mannequin, Mini goals, Bibs, Whistle, Stopwatch

Time: 15 mins

Players: 12

Work:Rest Ratio: 4:1

Area size: 20x20m

Description: 1v1 Dribbling

Players will look to dribble up to the mannequin and shift the ball to the right and then to the left as the drill progresses through the coned gates on the edge of the area.

Once they've dribbled through the gate, they will re-join the back of the same line.

1 player from each diagonal of the session will go at the same time (e.g. red bibs will go at the same time whilst blues wait. Once reds have finished their turn, blues go and reds wait)

Coaching Points:

  • Small, close touches
  • Use outside of the foot
  • Head up
  • Get up to arm's length of the mannequin
  • Emphasise movements
  • Big touch away from mannequin, quick acceleration afterwards
Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions)
  • Add various skill moves

  • Change direction
  • Time Limit of 5 seconds to perform action

Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

  • Max 4 touches
  • Always try and go through gate before opposite player does

Planned Interventions:

  • Team Meeting: At the beginning of the drill to explain the practice
  • Walkthrough: Players will walk through the practice with a demonstration before playing live
  • Freeze: Pause the practice when there is common mistakes that need to be addressed to the group
  • Bullseye: Pull an individual to the side to give feedback on session performance
  • Concurrent: Delivering feedback throughout the entire session whether it be positive or critical
Transition from Technique to Skill:

  • Mannequin is moved behind one mini goal
  • 1 minute drinks break
