5v3 Transition (10 mins)

Practice Objective:

  • Transitioning practice aimed at encouraging players to turn and play forward quickly once they have stolen the ball.
  • Team in BPO to win the ball as quickly as possible

Set Up;

  • 4 mini goals (optional step up)
  • Area 20m x 15m
  • Flat discs and cones to mark out
  • bag of balls
  • 2 different colour bibs

Practice Explanation:

  • Set up area as shown
  • Start with a 5v3 in Zone 1 and the remaining 2 in Zone 2
  • The 5 (yellow) are the team that start in possession, with the aim of maintaining possession  - set a passing target
  • The 3 (red) must win the ball as quickly as possible and then transfer to their 2 teammates in Zone 2. Now becomes a 5 (red) v 3 (yellow) in Zone 2.
  • 2 defenders always left in the opposite zone as target players.
  • Play is restarted by the coach in the centre
  • Play 5x2*/30R

Coaching Points;

  • Body position to receive and play - open
  • Use of the space to move the defenders and create 1-2 options - movement off the ball and on our toes
  • First touch - back foot receive or can we run onto the pass
  • Striking the ball - short quick passes or in transition can we use the instep for a longer switch pass
  • Defending team - how quickly can we win the ball back?
  • Delay and deny space
  • Step up game - finishing techniques, short and long finishes, power or accuracy?

Step Up (5 mins)

Step Up;

  • Now add finishing as an incentive to make the pass count, e.g if the team in BP make 5 successful passes they can score in the corner goals in their zone.
  • For double bonus points, after 5 successful passes can they score in the opposite Zone's goals from own half
  • Coach then plays a ball into the other zone and players must transition to restart the game
