Warm-Up/T1 - Pressing Technique (15 mins)

Set Up:

  • Three channels, 4/5 players per channel. Quickness of play means players won't be waiting for too long at the side.
  • Place two goals either side of the channel on the half way line as seen in the diagram.
  • Coach can drive-by each channel to make sure players are all working toward same objective.
Instructions

  • Orange defender starts the game by making a pass forward into the attacker who receives just in front of their starting position. Once pass is made, defender sprints to press the ball/player to prevent him from advancing forward into the 2nd half of the area.
  • Attackers goal is to try and stop the ball on the defenders starting position line.
  • Defenders goal is to prevent attacker from attacking their line and to force them through the two central/wide goals on the half way line.
  • Attacker gains a point if they accomplish the line, defender gains a point if they force the attacker through either of the central goals.
Coaching Points
  • Defenders body shape as they are travelling to press should be side on, knees bent, on toes as to move quickly if needed/react to movement of the ball.
  • Patience to try and delay attack forward and wait for triggers to try and regain (poor touch, bad decision, wrong technique).
  • Force attackers wide by adopting correct body shape (side on).

T2 - Pressing Skill (20 mins)

Set Up:

  • As seen in diagram, two small goals (cones) either side of channel. Two defenders, (based on number, add another pitch if high number of players) start behind small goals.
  • Three attackers are placed at the other end, one central and one either side of pitch.
Instructions:
  • Play starts with defender who plays a pass to one of three attackers. Attackers look to combine to try and score in any of their two small goals.
  • As soon as defender plays the pass, they can sprint forward to try and press the play and prevent the attackers from scoring.
  • If attackers score, they gain a point. If defender successfully blocks, tackles or intercepts the ball, they receive a point.
  • Ask attackers to play realistically and try to keep possession as much as they can by supporting movements and movement off the ball (realism).
Coaching Points
  • Starting defender sprints into area in front of goals to instigate a press against the three attackers.
  • Defender to think about correct body shape, delaying action, trying to force the play one way to restrict attackers.
  • Can defender block the ball players line to their target (goal) by screening quickly and aggressively.
  • Pressing triggers to try and regain (bad touch, slow decision, poor technique of action).

Conditioned Game - High Press (20 mins)

Set Up:

  • Conditioned game as seen in the diagram. Two teams, one beside one goal, made up of 6 players split into two teams of three. That team also has one ST in the opposite half.
  • The other team has two defenders, one ST and wingers on each side of the half way line.
  • Ball always starts with team beside the goal waiting to attack.
Instructions

  • Game starts with either middle or side players of team at the side of the goal. Upon first touch, orange team try to press the starting team, with two wingers by each side of half way line joining to support.
  • In this case, orange team look to press high up the pitch in the opposition half and if win possession, they can score.
  • Team who start look to use three players + striker to combine and score.
  • Orange wingers can go in both halves, orange ST has to stay in opposition half.
Coaching Points
  • Orange ST, LW or RW first to press based on whatever player starts the play or the ball movement (pass) to player.
  • Player first to press adopts correct body shape to try and delay attack.
  • Remaining two players look to provide the cover in a balanced shape (arc) or compact if in central area.
  • If ball is won high up pitch, how quickly can the team score.

7v7 Game (Topic Related) (30 mins)

Set Up: Play 7v7 with two teams across the full length of the pitch. Normal game rules apply, with no offside. Each team set up GK-2-3-1 to enable balance across all areas of the pitch. Change teams if unbalanced.

Instructions:

1. Normal 7v7 game, however if team out of possession can win the ball back in oppositions half and score in the same possession phase then the goal is worth double.

2. A goal from a teams' own half counts and is worth one point.

Coaching Points:

Encourage team out of possession to instigate a high press when without the ball, to make it hard for the team in possession to play forward and to be aggressive to prevent the in possession team advancing forward.

If team win possession in opponents half, encourage team to play at speed and be creative to try and score.
