Description

Session Objective: Being able to execute crosses from our wingers or outer backs from wide areas of the offensive third that allows our forwards and midfielders to make timely runs and create numbers in the box to create scoring chances and score goals.

Game Moment: In Possession

Physical Load: Threshold (75%)

Identified Game Situation:

Current Behavior: Our wingers are not able to execute crosses when wide play occurs in our offensive third, instead, playing a negative pass to our 2nd attacker which can be the 10, 9, or 6 as a support player to continue possession and play centrally to create scoring chances

Desired Behavior (5 W's):

What: Being able to execute crosses from our wingers from wide areas of the offensive third that allows our forwards and midfielders to make timely runs and create numbers in the box to create scoring chances and score goals

Who: 11, 7, 9, 10, 6

Where: Offensive third - left/right side of 18-yard box

When: When our winger engages against the opponent's outer back on the right or left side of the offensive third

Why: We want our wingers to learn how to execute crosses and engage against the opponent's outer back that disorients the opponent's defensive line to focus on the crosser while others makes runs into the box in front of goal to create scoring chances and score goals. We want to create unpredictable that allows our opponent to know we can play wide through crosses as well as centrally in the offensive third.

What Ifs:

* Most of the situations would be when we play wide, can our wingers deliver crosses into the 18-yard box. So we want to see 1v1 play and win the duel, or leverage the support player as a midfielder for a give and go opportunity

* 1v1 on wide areas

* 2v1 on wide areas (winger, plus midfielder against defender)

Coaching Points:

* Numbers in the box: fill zones in front of goal
 * Efficient occupation of zones in the box on cross: near post, back post, penalty spot, edge of box

  - Time your run in the box

  - Get unmarked or in front of opponent

  - Attack the ball

* Cross: into space or player
 * Time the cross in front or behind the backline

  - Recognize space (positioning of goalkeeper and defenders)

  - Recognize the positions and runs of teammates in penalty box

Warm-Up (10 mins)

Organization:

  • Modified game form
  • 5/35/5 (45) yards by 30

  • 5 yard lane on the left and right side of the 18 yard box as shown
  • A gate (two cones horizontal 3 yards apart) 5 yards off the goal line
  • Red cones at the start and another 3 yards behind to setup two lines as shown
  • Focus team - blue
  • Opponent team - N/A

Activity Objective:

  • Technique - learning how to execute a cross and the timing of the run by the forward

Instructions:

  • Active duration - 15 seconds
  • Rest duration - 15 seconds
  • Sets - first 10 sets on the right, then second 10 sets on the left
  • Technical activity - the middle line plays the ball to the right (or left), right lane player dribbles through the gates where a cross is executed thereafter. Middle line player attempts to time their run to receive the cross to score against GK
  • Rules/Restraints/Constraints - All side outs are resets of play back to the middle line
  • Rotations/Substitutions - Player that starts at the middle lane rotates to the right (or left) line and vice versa

Coaching Interactions:

  • What - Technique - we are teaching the players how to cross the ball with hips turned when striking the ball at target while the forward times their run into the box to score at goal. We want to see explosiveness through the gates to execute a cross thereafter from the winger
  • When - During Active Play - allow players lots of repetition and coach in real-time expectations to explode through the gates that will simulate separate to then turn hips and execute the cross. Watch the forwards time their runs to connect with cross.
  • How - Positive reinforcement - Keep it quick with high intensity and demand quickness of play. Reward positive play when witnessed explosion through gates, good crosses that connect with the forward to score
  • How - Model/Guided Q&A - coach shows players how to explode through gates, focus on technique of the cross turning hips, lock ankle, use laces or inside foot with power, find target player to play into forward. Forward times run

Function (25 mins)

Organization:

  • Modified game form
  • 5/35/5 (45) yards by 30

  • 5 by 5 yard box on the left and right side of the 18 yard box as shown
  • Two mini goals about 20 yards apart
  • Large goal at 6 yard box
  • Focus team - 5 in blue
  • Opponent team - 4 in red + GK

Activity Objective:

  • Crossing from width areas to make central runs and move forward into the 18-yard box to create scoring chances at goal

Instructions:

  • Active duration - 50 seconds
  • Rest duration - 10 seconds
  • Sets - 25 (alternate ball played left and right as sets are played)
  • 5v4+GK game. Coach (shown in 1) plays the ball to the right in set 1, left in set 2, and rotates right and left per set. When coach plays the ball out wide, winger engages against outer back to cross the ball. The midfielders make runs into the 18-yard box to receive the cross and score. If opponent wins the ball, counter to score at either mini goal.
  • Rules/Restraints/Constraints - All side outs are resets of play back to the coach. Wide players report back to their cones at start of set. In order for focus team to score, cross must happen in the 5 by 5 yard box. Offsides rule in effect.
  • Rotations/Substitutions - Rotate in new lane players after 5 sets (wingers, outer backs).

Coaching Interactions:

  • What - When the ball is played wide to engage the winger against the opponent's outer back, the winger learns to win 1v1 or plays give and go with the attacking midfielder to create separation and execute a cross with the forward and adjacent winger making timely runs to receive the cross to shoot at goal
  • Planned Outage - After the first 10 sets are observed, note if the wingers are winning 1v1 consistently or using give-and-go techniques. Either way, explain 1v1 if necessary (explode to win and separate from defender) versus give-and-go if we are just attempting 1v1 consistently. Ask the players the guided question of how the first 10 sets are going

  • How - Model/Demonstrate - coach demo explosiveness of 1v1 to separate (revert to warm-up for guided Q&A) and/or give and go technique and why. Important to inform wingers of give-and-go as an alternative option to create space for a cross

Phase (25 mins)

Organization:

  • Modified game form
  • Full field - 9v9 side (55 by 80)
  • 5 by 5 yard box in each corner of field
  • Full sided goals on each end
  • Focus team - 7 in blue + GK
  • Opponent team - 7 in red + GK

Activity Objective:

  • Crossing from width areas to make central runs and move forward into the 18-yard box to create scoring chances at goal

  • Active duration - 4 minutes
  • Rest duration - 1 minute
  • Sets - 5
  • 7v7+2 GK game. Players play a 8v8 game with two goalies where a cross needs to occur inside the 5 by 5 yard box to create a scoring chance to score.
  • Rules/Restraints/Constraints - In order to score, cross must happen in the 5 by 5 yard box. FIFA rules in effect
  • Rotations/Substitutions - Rotate in new lane players after every set (wing backs)

Coaching Interactions:

  • What - Wingers have to penetrate into the 5 by 5 yard box to cross. Forwards, midfielders, center backs work together to allow wingers support to reach the box to cross. When the ball is played wide to engage the winger against the opponent, how that winger wins 1v1 or plays give and go with the midfielder to create separation and execute a cross with the forward, midfielders making timely runs to receive the cross to shoot at goal
  • When - Freeze to capture a moment - coach ensures correct execution occurs and demos with players

  • How - Model/Demo - coach ensures correct execution occurs and demos with players similar to skills development activity
  • How - Observe & Adjust - coach observes players' ability to execute overall, in particular, crosses and give and go recognition, Important to recognize the cues created from skills development activity where winger recognizes space in front versus behind to win 1v1 or use midfielder as give-and-go. Once crosses executed, see runs made from forward, midfielders to connect on cross to create scoring chance or score at goal
