TECHNICAL (10 mins)

  • Aim of the session - dribbling, in particular developing a sudden change of pace and or direction

Organisation/setup

  • 30x30m box marked by white cones (adjust for number of players)
  • Larger box outside of this, approximately 1-2metres deeper, marked by red cones
  • 12 players split into 2x6 teams and bibbed up
  • One ball for each player
  • (Pointer for coach - refresh/have handy the mechanics of dribbling)
TECHNICAL
  • Aim is to work on mechanics of dribbling (low centre of gravity, using various surfaces of the ball, lots of touches) by dribbling freely around the white area, looking to avoid peers and dribble with 'head up'
  • After a minute or two to warm up; introduce 'COACHES WHISTLE/SHOUT'
  • On this mark; players are to look to initially CHANGE DIRECTION; by turning/manipulating the ball in a different direction; and dribbling out into the red area
  • After a minute or two, on the mark; players will now look to change DIRECTION and PACE; dribbling out into the red area
  • Can add an element of competition to this; last player from either team to enter the outer red square is the losing team. Be careful though; may discourage players dribbling and using central areas

SKILL (15 mins)

TRANSITION

  • Only change needed is to pair up a red with a blue; and one ball between each pair now
  • At the drinks break - can we think of good dribblers in the professional game? What makes them stand out? Which players need to be good dribblers... is this different in the modern game? (CDM/CM/ball carrying CB)

SKILL

  • Working in the same areas; each red is now paired with a blue
  • Red players starts with the ball, in possession; 'attacking'
  • Blue players are without the ball; 'defending'. The rule for the defending team is they must be at least a yard away; they are jockying the attacking player; but can be in any position ie in front; to one side; or following behind
  • On the 'COACHES WHISTLE/SHOUT', the attacking player has to try and change direction and/or pace; to get out into the red zone. The defending player can now try to block their path and/or win the ball.
  • If attacking player reaches the red zone; they win a point
  • If defending player retrieves the ball; or stops them entering the red zone within 5 seconds; they win a point
  • After each duel; attacker and defender swap roles
  • Allow free play to start; then review.
  • Can we highlight good attacking examples? Stepovers, chops, drops of the shoulder to change direction
  • Can we consider defensive positioning? Are we showing attacing players onto their weaker foot; giving them too much space or diving in too quickly?
