Football/Soccer Session (Beginner): 7v7 Week 3, Session 1: Passing & Receiving Techniques
Description
Practice teaching younger players various passing and receiving techniques, with an emphasis on brilliant basics (receiving on the half-turn with open body shape; use back-foot touches to face forward or break lines; receive with one foot, play with the other; take quality first touches to improve decisions; scan/check shoulders before receiving; play passes with proper speed, accuracy, timing, and technique/disguise).

10 mins
OUTLINE: Players work in pairs with a ball and a cone between them to practice a series of dragging and passing exercises focusing on control, alternating feet, and different surfaces of the foot.
SET-UP: One cone per pair, one ball per pair.
INSTRUCTIONS: Go through six timed exercises: (1) Two-touch, switch sides halfway through (45 sec), alternate feet; (2) One-touch, switch sides halfway (45 sec), alternate feet; (3) Two-touch, first touch inside left foot across cone, pass with right (1 min); (4) Two-touch, first touch inside right foot across cone, pass with left (1 min); (5) Two-touch, first touch outside right foot across cone, pass with right (1 min); (6) Two-touch, first touch outside left foot across cone, pass with left (1 min).
COACHING POINTS: Encourage close touches, body control, using the correct surface of the foot (inside/outside), and keeping the ball on the ground.
BRILLIANT BASICS THAT APPLY: Balanced dragging, using inside/outside of the foot accurately, quality first touch, and minimizing touches to maintain tempo.

OUTLINE/INSTRUCTIONS: Ball starts with the player between two goals, passes to the center mid who checks at an angle on the half-turn, then to the target player who dribbles quickly through the gate and finishes with a driven pass into a small goal. Players follow the sequence step-by-step, focusing on timing and accuracy of each pass.
SET-UP: See diagram (cones and four small goals).
COACHING POINTS: Focus on qualities of a good pass—weight, accuracy, timing, technique; receiving on the back foot and first touch out of the feet.
PROGRESSIONS: (1) Center mid bounces the ball back to the server, who drives the pass into the target player; (2) Add a give-and-go around the cone between the center mid and the target player.
BRILLIANT BASICS THAT APPLY: Receiving on the half-turn, back-foot receiving, quality first touch, accurate and timely passing, body positioning for control.

OUTLINE/INSTRUCTIONS: Three teams of four play with end teams keeping possession for four passes before attempting a direct switch to the opposite end while the middle team defends with two pressers. Coach plays balls into an end zone; end teams combine to complete four passes and attempt the switch, while the middle team presses with two players at a time. Points are awarded for successful switches or defensive wins.
SET-UP: Three teams of four, clearly marked end zones, balls with coach for distribution.
COACHING POINTS: Choose the correct pass type, break lines with driven/punched passes, clip longer switches, manage first touch under pressure, play to the safe side, and give teammates a “set-up” pass to enable the switch.
PROGRESSIONS: Restrict or prescribe pass types, adjust number of touches or passes required, or make the game continuous by immediately switching roles when defenders win the ball.
BRILLIANT BASICS THAT APPLY: Quality first touch, accurate and timely passing, scanning to read pressure, breaking lines with passing, and body positioning for control and receiving.
