Set Up:

3/4 Pitch

11v11

RED 3412 (Coached)

BLUE 442

3x8 min blocks w/2min rest

Session Explained:

  • RED aim to build up from the GK and exploit wide areas toscore via low crosses into the penalty area
  • BLUE aim to play as direct as possible into the front two and look toget shots off quickly
  • Throw ins taken as normalNo corners
Blue Problem

  • BLUE wingers follow wing backs - meaning blue FB can sit in and protect the space in the wide areas

Red Solution:
Main Solution:

  • Quick Switches of play to enable WCB to carry the ball forwards which will force the BLUE wingers tocome forward and engage, leaving the WB free/or forcing the BLUE FB to vacate their position to press WB creatingspace down the sides

Back 3

  • Stay wider in positioning - create more space between them and strikers - quick tempo to switch of play - limit passes/touches -miss players out if possible
  • WB- high and wide on the touchlines - aiming to stretch play
  • Midfield - occupy central positions to force opposition midfielders to stay central and not pop out and press advancing centre back
  • CF - play on outside shoulders of centre backs - potentially looking to keep fullbacks tucked in freeing up our WB - or if FB do pop out then in good positions to make runs down the sides
Extra Info
  • Bodies in the box - if WB delivering then two CF and furthest CM to make the box - opposite WB and other CM arriving in the box to pick up second balls or clearances
  • If CF delivering then opposite WB look to make the box also to support

Problem 2

Problem 2: BLUE CF split and play on outside shoulders of wide centre backs -
midfield four play narrow to protect the overload 3v2 in central areas

Red Solution:

  • MCB to step forward and look to play directly into  WB if opposition midfield four are too narrow - or play via CM if opposition midfield four are spread out (P1 and P2)
  • Back 3 split to force strikers to play wider thus creating more time and space for the MCB
  • Midfield 3 - holding midfielder play central - outside midfielder look to play behind the line of opposition midfielders and in between winger and CM  look to narrow them up - or receive the ball between the lines
  • WB - play wide on the touchlines but adjust position so you are in a passing lane for the MCB
  • CF play on outside shoulders of centre backs looking to keep fullbacks tucked in to protect - creating space for the WB
