Description

Week 3 starts with a great warm up for all ages as it involves stopping, starting, changes in direction AND needs lots of awareness and scanning (Physical Literacy Fun).

We then move to an individual focus again with the (Stay on The Ball) activity. Be patient with the players as their points totals might be quite low to begin with but over the weeks it will be great to see how these points totals are getting bigger and bigger as individual ability improves.

Individual ability is again the focus with the final game (Score or Help) as the 1v1 focus quickly changes into helping and supporting teammates as the game unfolds.

Physical Literacy Fun

Organisation: Suitable squares are marked out with cones. These squares are 6x6m square.

4 players start on the outside of the square with bibs placed in the SIDE of their shorts like a tail.

How to play:

  • The middle player tries to steal the bib as players travel across the square to get to different sides.
  • Team points are given for successful runs  (higher the risk-higher the points).
  • If the middle player steals a bib players change places and roles.

Points:

  • Running to an adjacent side without losing the bib 1 point (see video 1)
  • Running to the opposite side without losing the bib 3 points (see video 2)

The middle ‘tagger’ can change with a player on the outside when s/he has stolen the bib

Option 1: Add a ball for all players

Option 2: For just players on the outside (tagger is ‘live’ with no ball to slow them down)

Option 3: Add the rule that there can only be one player on each side of the square.

Physical Literacy Fun (2)

A run to the opposite side is harder so 3 points for this run.

If the tagger is able to take a bib then they swap with that player.

Try squares of different sizes.

Try playing in a triangle - this is much harder.

Stay on the Ball

Organisation:

How to play: A player is designated as the one who can start the practice (in the video this is the Yellow team). When they decide to go, the opponent must react and now they both run in to gain possession of the ball. The area is 6x6m square.

Whichever team (Yellow or White) gets there first they MUST Hide and Manoeuvre the ball away from their opponent for as long as possible.

Whilst the player on the ball in the middle is doing this, the teammate on the side starts to dribble around the cones and back to the start. Every time a circuit is completed 2 points are scored so the longer the player in the middle can keep the ball (and the faster the dribbler can go) then the more points they will get.

BUT, if the player in the middle takes the ball out of play or is forced out of play then the dribbler must stop (remember the points total) and the other team get the ball in the middle and they stay on it whilst their teammate dribbles in order to try to beat the score of the other team.

If the defender kicks the ball out they restart the game and they continue in possession as their teammate dribbles and collects more points.

KEY MESSAGE: Stay on the ball to help your partner and if defending, avoid kicking it away; instead be patient and try to gain possession for your team.

Option 1: Carefully select who plays against who to match ability and maturation levels.

Option 2: Select names out of a hat to randomly select opponents and teammates.

Option 3: alter the playing area to suit age and ability levels. Bigger to give more time and space. Smaller to increase the challenge.

Score or Help

This is a great game for attacking and defending.

Organisation: Each team has 3 players and for this game there is a GK in each goal. The pitch is 25x15m.

One team starts with a ball each (Yellow) and the White team pick an opponent to play against.

How to play:

When the game starts each Yellow player is trying to score a goal.

  • If a Yellow player scores they must help a teammate score, (if they still have their ball) OR help get the ball off a White player if they have taken possession.
  • The White team can only swap places and become the attacking team IF they can take the ball off any Yellow player and score themselves.
  • If the ball changes possession, or goes out of play, then that ball is deeded the player must look to help their teammates to either score or defend the goal.
  • If the GK saves a shot then they distribute to their team and the game continues.
In the video 3 Yellows attack 1v1. The ball of Yellow 4 goes out of play so he must help his teammates. Yellow 4 then shoots and the GK saves it and starts a counter attack. Yellow 7 scores then must defend to stop Whites scoring. White 8 scores and so the White team now become the attacking team and the game resets.

Option 1: Play the game 5v5 to create even more action.

Option 2: Play without GK's to increase the need to defend.

Option 3: Introduce a scoring zone from which goals can only be scored (this is useful if you play the game without GK's)

Option 4: If the team attacking don't score with any of the three balls then they have to defend.

Option 5: the defending team MUST score otherwise they stay as the defending team.
