Defensive Shape

On loss of possession we have to sprint back to get in a 1-3-2-0 formation. We will defend deep in order to counter attack. In the defensive third, encourage them to play out wide and do not press them in wide areas. Back 3 shuffle across like you would in a match (but not out wide) with furthest CB level with far post. Two midfielders shuffle as ball shuffles to put pressure on the ball and to screen passes into the striker. If a goal is urgently needed we go 1v1 (including GK) all over the pitch.

Attacking Shape

On gaining possession we will quickly look to counter attack with no set shape. One player plus the keeper must stay disciplined and stay in defensive positions. If the counter attack does not happen then we form a 1-2-1-2 shape and work the ball to create 1v1 situations (that result in an opportunity on goal) for anyone. GK should play high and be prepared to be involved in possession too.

If we are a goal up and the counter attack does not happen, enjoy plenty of possession (especially if the opposition drop off). You want the team to press you as this will enable space to find someone in a 1v1. If we are a goal down and desparate for a goal then GK plays as an outfield player to create an overload.

Do not shoot from distance unless you are pretty certain you will score. Nearly all goals are 1v1 with a keeper or "sweaty" goals. Do not cross the ball unless you are sure it will reach a teammate.
