Organization:
No. of players = 5 outfield players (2 FBs, 2 MFs & 1 Winger) +1 GK
Area of the pitch = Final 3rd Additional pitch markings:
-
Shaded area (Area for Blue #2 to run into and for #8/10 to pass into)
-
Line of mannequins blocking the front post to work on a chip cross or a cut back.
-
Red Tapered Line for the Redd #2 to stay beside where he can only adjust body position to block shots and not defend 1v1 at 100%.
Explanation:
Ball 1: 1st ball starts with the #11, who plays it to the #10 who
then passes it to the #8, after which the #8 will play a through ball in behind into the shaded area for the blue #2 to run onto. As that's happening the #10 will make a timed run into the box as a late run for the cut back (Blue #2 must make a cut back cross)
Ball 2: As soon as Ball 1 is dead, I will play a ball into the #8 who must play a long diagonal ball into the #11, as that ball is travelling out the #11, the Red #2 will get pressure and Shadow defend the #11, following the red tapered line. Once #11 has reached the edge of the box he must decide to cut onto his right foot to shoot or cut onto his left foot to shoot.
Ball 3: As soon as Ball 2 is dead I will play a ball into the #10 who will then play a long ball out to the Blue #2, the Blue #2 must combine with the Blue #8 using a give and go to get in behind into the same shaded area, only this time instead of cutting the ball back the blue #2 must chip the ball into the back post for the Blue #11.
Ball 4 (Optional): If the Blue #2 misses the cross, I will play a ball into the Blue #8 to deliver a "half-space cross" into the back post for the #11 to finish (so he still gets his 2 shots).
Those 3/4 balls will make up "1 round", after which the #8/10 will swap roles and the practice starts again.
How the practice will progress to make it harder for the blues:
-
Blue #8/10 must use their right foot when switching out to the right and left foot when switching out to the left.
-
Red #2 can defend 100% against the #11 Ball 2
-
Red #2 Defends 100% in the box for Ball 3 (increased decision making for the Blue #2 - as we will have to decide whether to cut the ball back or chip back post depending on the Red #2's position)
Coaching Points:
Blue #2:
-
Change of pace for the give and go + Crossing technique.
Blue #8/10:
-
Weight of pass, direction of pass and spin on the ball
-
Timing and area of the box to arrive at
Blue #11:
-
Fixing the defender's weight on one foot to go to the other.
-
Timing to arrive at the back post (Blue #2 Plants non-kicking foot)
-
Area of the box to arrive at
Red #2:
-
Block shots using inside foot & don't turn head away from the ball.
-
Positioning to defend back post (if we can progress onto this based on session success)
