Welcome to the 2026/27 Select Team Season!

This is where you will go over the rules and expectations of your teams. This year we are really going to focus on 3 main components for all of our teams that fall under the professionalism umbrella:

1. Focus

2. Effort

3. Character

Focus of the Week:

Individual recovery - defensive angles

1v1 Defensive Mentality (Defensive Angles)

Set-Up:

  • Create multiple stations so no one is standing in line too long.

  • Each station has 6 players with two goals. 2 different teams - one on Attack one on defense and always lined up against each other.

Description

  • 2 players from opposite teams pass the ball freely. One team attacks, one team defends.

  • At any moment, the attacking player closest to the cones can dribble through the cones and shoot at the goal placed diagonally (On Opposite cone line).

  • As soon as the player attacks, one defender from the opposite station must sprint back through cones and try to intercept the shot before the ball enters the goal.

  • After each action, players return to their positions and the game starts again.

  • 1 point if the attacker scores.

  • 2 points if the defender intercepts the ball and keeps possession.

Coaching Points

  • Attack with speed and decide the right moment to shoot.

  • React immediately from attack to defense.

  • Sprint back quickly and recover the best defensive position - Protect the goal.

  • Stay balanced when trying to block or intercept the shot.

    Defensive Mentality Explained

The goal is not only to chase the opponent, but to recover the empty space, protect the goal, and win the ball back as quickly as possible. The faster we react after losing possession, the shorter the time between losing the ball and winning it back.

    Key points

    • React immediately when possession is lost.

    • Sprint back to recover the most dangerous space.

    • Protect the goal before the player.

    • Slow down under control as you get closer to the attacker.

    • Be mentally ready to defend the moment you lose the ball.

      * Good for learning to defend a parallel - Cut to cover the middle, do not run directly to the player.

1v1 to 2 Goals - Golden Goal Defense

Set Up: 2 bazookas. Dots. Balls. 2 Volcano Cones. Use both halves of the court, split players, 1 coach on each side.

How To

- Create 2 lines. Attacking line is in between the 2 cones, defending line is in between the 2 Goals.

- First defender begins by passing the ball out to first attacker, positioned in between the 2 cones. First attacker must receive with sole before attacking either bazooka goal.

** As the defender passes the ball, they must point either right or left, labeling that goal as the "Golden Goal"

That goal is now worth 2 points if the attacker scores on it, while the other goal is only worth one. This should then force the defender to defend with the angle in mind. They should cut off the angle of the golden goal to not give up points. Force the attacker to the other goal and hope to win a tackle.

- Attacker must take 3 touches mandatory before they can shoot.

- If defender wins the ball, they may dribble through the gate on either side under control for 3 points!

- Set up teams is they are competing! time limit of 2 minutes per round of attack and defending, create a round robin tournament.

Objectives:

 - Cutting angles

- defensive honor

- forcing out

- triangle of perception

- ball control

- 1v1 skills

- Attacking the space

- Passing introduction

1v1 From Half Court -Defensive Angled Recovery

Set up: Bring Goal to Half Court, set up 2 teams at the half on the corners as shown. 1 team is attacking 1 is defending.

Drill: Attacker will take off and dribble towards the goal in front of them, defender will take off at the same time and work to recover and defend. If defender wins the ball back they can try to score on the other goal.

Attacker scores = 1 point

Defender steals ball and scores = 2 points

Defender forces attacker out of bounds without a tackle = 1 point for defender

*switch who attacks and defends half way through, also switch sides half way through to ensure they are attacking from both sides.

Focus:

 - Angled recovery

- defensive line of confrontation

- RWB at pace

- Cutting Inside

- Finishing

- Defensive recovery/ Decision Making
