Framing + Explanation:
The blue team are set up in a 4-1-4-1 formation as they try to maintain a strong central line for attack and defence. Their gameplan will be to play through us.
In order to exploit how narrrow the blues are, the reds will set up in a 3-4-3 formation. In this specific practice we will be focusing on building up from the goalkeeper by switching the play through the centrebacks and wide midfielders.
Goalkicks and throw-ins will take place as normal.
Coaching Problem:
REDS - Switch the Play via the GK during the Build Up
The ball will start with the red goalkeeper who looks to build from the back. The GK will play to the left CB who plays to the left wide midfielder #5 on the sideline - this is the golden coaching moment. The winger feints a central attack be shaping to take the wide midfielder #7 on, before playing back to the CB #3 who plays to the GK before punching the pass across the the right CB who has adopted a wide position outside the 18yrd box. They have the option to play centrally to #6 or down the line to #10.
BLUES - Defend the Problem
The blues are focusing on staying compact and forcing the reds to play around them in the switch. Their job is to shift laterally in defence with their midfield 4. The striker #9 is looking to cut passing channels off inside the 18yrd box but is pressing alone so there will be space to exploit for the reds. The #6, CB #5 and GK will need to communicate to manage the space behind the midfield line if the ball is switch and the reds successfully play around the midfield and attack the g
Challenges, Conditions or Targets:
Condition -
The shaded area is a loose constraint where the blues will begin their defensive shape. While they are not restricted to this area, they will be encouraged to reset into this are to protect the central channel, focusing on maintaining their depth.
The corners are tapered to replace the fullbacks on the blue team and wingers on the red team
Challenge -
BLUE - Can defend the central channel before pressing the player on the ball and forcing them to play backwards? When they play backwards can the #9 press the goalkeeper and cut passes off to the centrebacks? Can the GK, #6 and CB combine to protect the space behind the midfield?
RED - Can you manipulate the defence to create space for the switch in the build up? Can you connect as a back 3, GK and wide midfielders to act like a pendulum and swing across when switching the ball, focusing on maintaining width?
Target -
BLUES
Once the winger begins to switch, if you can win the ball back within 5sec and score = 2 goals
REDS
If you successfully switch and score in the build up from a goalkick = 2 goals

1min Terminal Intervention
Explanation:
BLUES -
Defending as a 4-1-4-1 your pirmary focus is to defend the central channel. You will look to press vertically forcing the reds to play around you, and that is when you utilise your wide midfielders who can slide across to defend the switch and force a predictable pattern to the opposite wing. This is when the #9 can press and force an error from the GK/CBs. The central midfielders will also look to support this attack.
REDS -
As the blues will be defending centrally and looking to press vertically, your job will be to drag the midfielders wide before quickly switching the play before the blue striker can cut off the passing channels. To keep the #9 engaged we will utilise a central bounce pass into one of our holding midfielders.
Problem
The problem for the red team to solve is how can the continue switching the ball in the presence of a #9 who is going to press aggressively and try to cut the passing channels off the the opposite centreback.
The golden coaching moment will be once the red GK has received the ball. When the #9 presses left to cut the passing channel off the CBs #4/2, the bounce pass to #8 will create an angle to allow a pass out to right CB who can then play wide midfielder #10.
Solution
ON THE BALL
- GK receives the ball from CB #3. They are going to shape to pass to CB #4 before playing a central pass to #8.
