Diversion Drill: 6v3, 3 pinnies, cones to mark play area, use goal or pop ups if needed, plenty of balls.
Rules:
Players have to use off ball movement and passing to attack the space. Possession is key.
Set a pass and touch limit.
Goals can be scored by anyone.
Overlapping runs are expected, a player must drop and cover the runners position.
Defenders need to clear the ball out of the danger area.
The coach starts the drill by playing it into an open player. Players should shift and move to support the pass. Change of direction and point of attack is key critical. The defenders are defending as a team, not as individuals.
The attackers are looking to attack the spaces created by the defenders pressing the ball. The passing options shown in the frames are just a few that could be used depending on the position of the defenders and the attacking players. We want to make sure the defenders do not win the ball and we protect it at all times. The attackers should be trying to attack the space and score but not forcing a goal.
Runs, checks, and off ball movements are one of the key factors to this drill. Dragging a defender with you can open up a space for a scoring opportunity. Please inform your players that they do not need to be involved with the ball to create an opportunity to score.
Change the defenders every few minutes. Start with more attackers than defenders and then make the teams even, and lastly make it a defensive overload. Test your athlete's ability to be creative.
