Screen 1 (10 mins)

This session is based upon dribbling and beating your man whilst also learning about spatial awareness, individual positioning and team shape as the team I am coaching fail to understand this in a game situation. In this drill the players will take it in turns to try to take on the other player and the aim is to either win the ball or get the ball into the other player's end zone.

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions): A progression for this is drill is that I will ask the players to try perform a forward attacking skill such as a double stepover push to further develop ball control and comfortability with the ball at their feet. A regression for this drill is that I will make it so that the defender cannot go past halfway and therefore the attacker has more time to gain momentum and distance towards the end zone.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets: I will challenge the players to try to take the man on with their left feet so that the players feel comfortable playing on both feet when dribbling and running with the ball. A condition that I will add is that the players cannot look down at the ball at their feet as to develop that muscle memory of where the ball is when dribbling. The target I would add is that every successful dribble counts as a point and if they do it with a forward attacking skill then it counts as double.

I will then take it into the next drill which is a conditioned small sided game where I have split the pitch up into thirds and you must dribble through a gate to get into the next area however only one person can go through a gate at any time and the players must stay in the thirds that they have been told to stay in. The players then have to score to get a point. This will create attacking overloads and develop the players dribbling accuracy and ability.

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions): A progression for this drill is that I will start closing off different gates with cones and this will then mean that the players will have to look up and scan before moving through a gate, thus develop the ability to scan for space when on the ball and the importance of this is proven by M. Polkom (2018) " visual scanning frequency to be a valid predictor for successful passes as well as changes in a player’s body orientation, which are both mediated by opponent pressure". A regression for this drill is that I will allow a player from both teams to progress or regress through a gate at once to ease the overload and make it easier to develop the focused skills learned in this session.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets: I will challenge the players to try to get through a gate as quick as possible as to make it game realistic, where it is our aim to get up the field quickly and successfully to get into a scoring position. A condition I will add  is that in the middle third your team must make three passes before progressing and this will add realism as it is unlikely in a game that you can play it from the defender straight to the forward and therefore they must create passes in the middle of the park. A target for this session is that if a player can get through a gate by using a forward attacking skill then they will also get a point and therefore this is training the players ability to control the ball and be creative to beat the man.

This exercise is very similar to the last one however instead of there being gates that are being blocked off, I will a gate at each corner of the pitch and as another way of scoring a point you can dribble through these cones, further incentivising dribbling.

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions): A progression for this is that I will reduce the area size so that there is less space for the players to run with the ball and therefore this is further improving the players close ball control. A regression for this drill is that I will make it so that the defenders in the thirds cannot be tackled and therefore this means that they have more time to make it through a gate and perform more successful dribbles.

Challenges, Conditions or Targets: I will challenge the players to dribble through the gate with the foot that correlates to where the gate is so for example dribbling through a gate on the left with their left foot as this will make it more game realistic and the players can take these skills into a game, I will make the condition that the players only have to make two passes in the middle third rather than three so that there is a higher focus on dribbling rather than passing. Finally, a target for this drill is that if the players can dribble through the gates in the corner it counts as two points rather than the one point scored in the goal to encourage dribbling rather than scoring.
