This drill > SSG will look at my individual/unit/teams roles & responsibilities from an opposition goal kick to help increase our chances of both winning 1st/2nd ball and preventing an opposition attack.

Problem 1
* As blue GK approaches ball to take goal kick the yellow back 4 drop early for a set to attack 1st ball. The problem is that the timing and pace of the drop is different to the midfeild unit which leaves a large gap for blue team to get goal side to pick up 2nd balls or link with striker.
Solution
* highlight the importance of individual/unit/team working on a trigger to drop together and at the same pace to maintain a compact and narrow shape. You are looking for a domino effect with the back 4 pulling the midfield unit + deep lying striker to limit space and and to create a defensive overload to increase chances of picking up 2nd balls.
keypoint:
* midfield players need to anticipate and protect by making sure they stay goal side for 2nd balls + CM players can screen opposition CF allowing CH's to attack 1st ball.

* As CH attacks 1st ball both FB's filter in to make a narrow & compact back 3 unit which is catalyst for midfield players to drop in + striker to create a 4-51 defensive shape.

Organisation/Set up:
* Same set up as drill only yellow team will now attack full size goal and red team will attack small goals in channels + 5 yd end zone width of 18 yd box to run ball in to.
* Yellow team will set up as a 4-2-2 formation & Red team a 2-3-2 + GK
* Yellow team will be 6v5 in defensive half & 2v2 in offensive half.
* Play will always start from Red GK who has to play direct into opposite half & inside the channels.
* If yellow team win possession or clear ball into opposite half then they can release a player from defensive 1/3 to create a 3v2 overload in attacking half.
* Yellow team have an 8 second limitation to try and score once they have entered the attacking half.
* Red team are trying to score in small goals in channels or run ball into end zone to score.
* Only a Yellow player can enter the channels in attacking 1/2 3v2 with the channels in the yellow defensive 1/2 open for both teams.
* Play continues untill ball is out of play or 8 second limitation for yellow team has expired.
Keypoint:
* possible progressions if needed
1/ If yellow team are winning possession too easily then stipulate that they have to have 2 passes in defensive 1/3 before they can attack with the 3v2 overload
2/ Play all in with no zonal limitations for both teams > you can then encourage GK to play forward quickly when yellow team are out of shape during transition.
3/ Allow Red GK to distribute into wide channels if needed to target full backs if you have dominant CH's.
*Duration: 30 mins (3x10 min blocks) with change over of players after each block if required.
concurrent coaching is key to prompt timing of drop/distances etc.
*Coaching style: Guided discovery > autocratic if emphasis on a key coaching point is needed.

See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
* one of the red teams CF is dominant in the air and even though we have one of our CM players screening he is still flicking on 1st balls for midfield runners + 2nd striker to score in the end zone.
Solution:
* Give your back 4 the option of dropping off and not attacking the 1st ball > allow your midfield player to screen and challenge the CF > this will allow you to pick up runners more easily and limit the space in behind for runners.
Keypoints:Recommendations
> review your defensive shape on a game to game basis as we find that our players drift away from its importance when not revisited regularly.
> the 1st ball is always a fighting ball so create a defensive overload in the 2nd ball zone to increase your chances of gaining possession.
> use of the CM screen is key to limit space/options for an aerially dominant CF
> an individuals movement is the trigger for his unit/team to drop together to be more compact and narrow
> the majority of our successful attacks have come from a solid defensive shape on transition with the opposition gambling past the ball for 2nd balls.
** repetition > repetition > repetition with use of on field coaching & analysis to provide feedback.

DRILL: ORGANISATION/SET UP (20 mins)
Drill: Organisation/Set up
* In the 11v11 game each team will be playing in a 4-4-2 formation
* I am coaching the yellow team who are set up for the drill in a 4-4-1 formation with the opposition blue team set up as manequinns in a 2-4-2 in the mid 1/3 at coaches discretion (dependant on distance GK can strike ball from Goal Kick) + live GK to start play.
* Pitch geography: 18 >18 yd box length + full width with 2 channels marked out from edge of 18 yd box to touch line > full size goal for my yellow team to defend & a small goal in each channel for blue team to defend.
* For the purpose of the drill the blue team GK will start play with a goal kick on his 6 yd line and he will have 12 balls which are fed back to him via coaches.
Set up/Conditions:
* Play starts from the Blue team GK who takes a goal kick direct into oppositions half.
* i will then coach the yellow team as individual/unit/team on the following coaching points:
> starting position
> distances: width & depth in relation to ball & each other
> timing of drop
> responsibilities
> body position
> decision making on 2nd phase if we win possession.
* After goal kick the yellow team will have 8 seconds after 1st touch to try and score in either small goal and are limited to 2 touch.
* Yellow team are limited to a maximum of 2 passes in central area and can only score if they have penetrated a channel.
* Coaching style: Autocratic on certain points with progression to guided discovery.
* Duration: 15-20 min block with 1st 5 goal kicks allowed to play freely to set the scence before coaching points are addressed.
Main Objective:
educate players on the importance of attacking from a narrow and compact defensive shape and how the distances of individuals/units/team in relation to each other influences the chances of winning both 1st & 2nd balls on opposition Goal kicks.
Reflection:
** my team has conceded several times this year when teams have picked up 2nd balls goal side of my midfield unit resulting in offensive overloads in final 1/3. Even though this drill is a fundamental BASIC tactical component emphasised during pre season we feel repetition is KEY to prevent a drop in baseline standards.
