Set up (10 mins)

Attacking break-out game (counter attacking)

Area 60 x 30/40.

Central zone approximately 30 x 30.

Sides are balanced with the primary unit for the session being the 4, 8, 9 and 10.

Objectives and Conditions/Constraints

Players take part in a possession game in the central area with only the number 4 able to play a through ball for a team mate to run onto and have an unopposed 1 v 1 with the goal keeper.

If the player leaves the centre zone before the pass they will be offside (progress to being on the last player).

Defenders are not allowed to chase back into the end zone at this point.

Consider only allowing identified players to attack from each team. This should put them under increased defensive pressure/marking and force the player to be more mobile and inventive to create space for them to attack.

Key coaching factors

• Quality of passing and receiving skills on developing the play.

• Timing of movement by strikers.

• Awareness on receiving possession.

• Individual skills of turning, passing to others, holding the ball.

• Combination play player in the unit

• Goal scoring – decisions and execution of skills

break-out (10 mins)

If the goal keeper saves the shot and keeps possession, can they play into their colour quickly to create an overload in the middle zone.

This will encourage the players to play quickly and counter attack as per the playing philosophy.

Wingers/wider players will be added to side zones to use as support and to stretch play, they too can also break-out when the 4 is in possession. The ball must be played to space in front of the wingers for them to take part. They also play in either directions to help ensure that they are put under loadings.

Defenders (10 mins)

As a progression, one defender can be allowed to track and attempt to intercept the attacker.

If the breakout team scores the keeper plays a ball straight back to the goal scorer for their team to attempt to play straight through and attempt to score in the opposite goal. The defender that tracked the scorer should attempt to apply pressure throughout.
