Description

These animations are to act as a visual tool for Team NB U13 White and Burgundy players start to understand movement patterns when building out of the back in Zone 1 and Zone 2. Each of these examples is starting from the Fullback Low platform. Fullback Low is when our fullbacks are assisting in the build-up play with the centrebacks. They provide the platform to build our attack.

(These animations are just examples of possible pictures that you may see on the field. They offer ideas on potential solutions based on specific triggers.)

Build up from a goal kick

Fullback Low:

Objective is to always create a +1 numerical overload.

  • 5 and 4: Start inside the 18-yard box just off of the six-yard box.
  • 6: Find a central position that is unmarked. Start behind the pressing line in a gap. Depending on positioning of defenders, make a diagonal run to receive.
  • 3 and 2: Start in a wide and advanced position near top of Zone 1 until the first pass is made and then look to support by dropping or moving up.
  • 8 and 10: Look for pockets of space and be moving to draw defenders to create space elsewhere. Your movements will be triggers for others to move. Some options:
    • Can you support alongside?
    • Can you make a channel run?
    • Can you roll out to a wide area?
  • 7, 9, 11: Pin the Back 4 at centre. Give us depth.

As the ball progresses up the field, we need to see trianges:

  • We will look to see a midfield triangle of 6, 8 and 10.
  • We will look to see a forward triangle that incorporates 11, 9 and 8 or 9, 7 and 10, depending on where the ball is
  • Our Back 4 will also move up to support and should create triangles underneath once the ball goes forward, for instance with the 6, 4 and 2.
Movements:
  • 6: Slide side to side, finding pockets of space to receive in behind the pressing players.
  • 8 and 10: Your movements are the trigger for our forwards. Can you find ways to support in one of three areas: support alongside, rollout or channel run

As play travels to centreback:

  • Fullback drops lower to receive the ball. Receive with an open body.
  • Holding midfielder looks to create a triangle between CB and FB.
  • If FB can play into the holding midfielder, she should.
  • Holding midfielder can look to dribble and draw a defender or play forward into space
  • Can FB make a forward run to draw defenders and create space
  • How can AM look to support forward on an angle from HM, FB and WF

Fullback Low: Use of switch (20 mins)

There will be times when the defending team is denying forward passing options. When this happens, we must look to find other ways to maintain possession. This includes a switch of play.

In this instance, notice how the wide forward's progress is blocked. The 10 is supporting alongside, but there are two defenders nearby.

  • The fullback (3) offers a diagonal supporting option to play back
  • CB recognizes a switch is on, so she starts dropping quickly in order to create a diagonal passing option from fullback.
  • Other CB sees her partner's movement and drops and gets in a position to receive promptly.
When the switch is on, we are looking to exploit space quickly.

When CB receives, examine options:

  • Can you pass directly to the opposite wide forward to speed up the play? (Higher risk, higher potential reward)
  • Can you pass to your CB or FB who has more time or space? (Less risk of losing possession, higher chance opposition organizing to block progress)
  • Can you dribble forward to draw defender and create space?

Fullback Low: Channel Run by 8/10 (20 mins)

When we are in our Attacking Organization, we will look for movement patterns to create space.

The Attacking Midfielders -- 8 and 10 -- are the triggers for action.

In this instance, notice how 10 makes a channel run. This trigger signals the wide forward (7) to drop lower to create width receive from the fullback. That movement draws the fullback. The 10's channel run creates space for a pass.

If the 10 makes a channel run and the opposing fullback does not move up to defend the 7, then that would create space for the 7 to attack in the wide channel.

Fullback Low: Support alongside (20 mins)

When we are in our Attacking Organization, we will look for movement patterns to create space.

The Attacking Midfielders -- 8 and 10 -- are the triggers for action.

In this instance, you will see the 3 is blocked by the opposing winger. As well, a back pass is not an option given the 5 is marked.

The 10 sees this and supports alongside. This movement is a cue for the 7 and 9 to stay high to keep defenders out of that space.

The 10 now has space to receive. Her decisions at that point could be:

  • Is a forward pass an option? If yes, then play quickly to beat the defenders.
  • If not, can the 10 dribble forward to draw out a defender? Once a defender steps out can she find an open player?

Fullback Low: Roll in/Roll out (20 mins)

When we are in our Attacking Organization, we will look for movement patterns to create space.

The Attacking Midfielders -- 8 and 10 -- are the triggers for action.

In this instance, you will see the 10 and 7 will swap rolls. The 10 will "roll out" to the wing. She is the trigger for the 7 to "roll in" toward the centre.

This movement is intended to destabilize the defenders.

Can the 10 receive the ball and attack forward quickly? If so, she should take that space. That will open up space elsewhere.

If the 7 can make a channel run from inside, can the 10 play her the ball into space? If so do it. If not, that run should draw out the defender and create space elsewhere.

Can the 7 and 10 combine for a pass into the attacking zone?
