Warm-Up (10 mins)

Key Factors

  • Set Position - Feet shoulder width apart, legs slightly bent, eyes focusing on the ball. Stay on your toes with your weight forwards to allow and easy push off.
  • Collapse - Catch the ball in the W technique and and collapse over to the side with the ball. Extend your arms to ensure you don't collapse on to you shoulder.

Organisation

  • This is a 10 minute practice can involve 3 or 4 goalkeepers and it is used as a warm-up for a diving session. One of the goalkeepers starts inside the cone square, and receives a ball from the goalkeeper on the side and has to volley the ball back with a side foot volley (this can be a normal pass depending on age and ability).
  • The goalkeeper then turns and catches a ball in the W technique and collapses to one side and protects the ball.
  • The goalkeepers should work in sets of 5 before rotating.

Technical Practice Part 1 (10 mins)

Key Factors

  • Set Position - Feet shoulder width apart, legs slightly bent, eyes focusing on the ball. Stay on your toes with your weight forwards to allow and easy push off. Begin the dive by pushing off with the leg that is closest to the side that you are diving on.
  • Extend your arms to not only reach the ball, but to avoid landing on your shoulder which could potentially cause an injury.
  • Footwork - Ensure that you shuffle over as you dive and don't cross over your legs. This reduces the power involved in your push off and can put you off balance.
  • W Technique - Make a W shape with your hands, thumbs together and behind the ball, keep your core and head still and keep your eyes on the ball.

Organisation

  • This is a 20 minute practice that is the main part of the session. The practice has progressions and it is split in to 2 parts. Part 1 is on screen 2, and part 2 is on screen 3. The goalkeeper that starts the practice begins about 1 or 2 yards off of the goal line. The coach will serve a ball on the volley and the goalkeeper must catch the ball in the W technique at the first cone on their right. They will then drop the ball, and make a diving save at the far cone on the same side. Another goalkeeper should serve the ball for the diving save along the ground.
  • The goalkeepers should work in sets of 5, and rotate after each goalkeeper has performed the practice 5 times. Ensure that you work on both sides and swap sides after goalkeeper has completed 5 sets on each side.

Technical Practice Part 2 (10 mins)

  • This is the progression and the second part of the main practice. The goalkeeper that starts the practice begins about 1 or 2 yards off of the goal line. The coach will serve a ball on the volley and the goalkeeper must catch the ball in the W technique at the first cone on their right. This time, instead of diving to save a shot along the ground, the goalkeeper must shuffle across for a diving side to the side. The ball should be served about halfway up the goalpost to ensure that it is reachable and realistic for the goalkeeper to make a good attempt at making the save.
  • The goalkeepers should work in sets of 5, and rotate after each goalkeeper has performed the practice 5 times. Ensure that you work on both sides and swap sides after goalkeeper has completed 5 sets on each side.

  • You could add in a mannequin to act as a defender who may be in the eye-line of the goalkeeper.
