Warm Up takeover (5 mins)

You don't need to do all the levels, and you can vary the time and area dependent on the players.

Need at least 8 players, 1 ball per 2 players, large square 30 yards by 30 yards or as required, small square around 3 yards by 3 yards. All the players on the inside start with the ball and dribble toward a player on the outside of the large square, the player on the outside does a "take-over" with the inside player. The inside player then becomes an outside player. The new inside player dribbles back through the small square and repeats the sequence with another outside player.

Inside player focuses on dribbling technique, head up and communication. Outside player focuses on communication and moving toward inside player for the "take-over". If inside player dribbles with right foot outside player should take over the ball with their right foot.

Add left or right footed dribbling requirements or a dribble move well in advance to entering the small square.

Warm Up short pass (5 mins)

Same as stage #1 but the exhange is done with a 3 yard side footed pass.

Inside player still focuses on dribbling but now must implement an accurate, correctly weighted, side footed pass. The outside player must use their 1st touch to avoid the oncoming inside player then dribble through the small square to repeat the sequence.

Warm Up long pass (5 mins)

As soon as the inside player passes through the small square they should pass to the outside player and add a change of pace to get to the outside of the square. Dribbling with the head up and communication become a lot more crucial as other players will be going for the same outside player. Everybody has to hear the players. Weight and accuracy of the pass are also more important. The added change of pace increases the tempo. The passes will be more firm so the outside player's first touch is vital.

Warm up long pass, return pass and set (5 mins)

Like stage #3 the inside, dribbling player goes through the small square and plays a long pass to the outside player. The outside player plays it one touch back to the inside player who sets the ball for the outside player as the player comes in to the large square.

All the dribbling and passing principles still apply but now the players have to think about timing of runs, body shape and foot choice.

The inside player's pass has to be perfect for a one touch return pass. The inside player has to slow down their run so they are not on top of the outside player. They have to run back on an angle and fix their shape. This will tell the outside player where to play the ball and where to make their run. The inside player uses their back foot to set the ball for the oncoming outside player.

The outside player has to play their one time pass to the back foot of the inside player, make their run and receive the return pass on their back foot.
