Description

Shotstopping session with focus on readjusting to set in effective positions. Use of game related scenarios to trigger various positional readjustments including CBs losing possession, CAM combining with #9 and wingers, cut backs and late midfield runs to edge of box.

Activation Game (10 mins)

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • 6x6 box
  • 4 GKs/ Coach round outside of box

Instructions/Explanations:

  • Outside players aim to keep possession of ball and play as many passes as possible
  • GK in middle aims to save/ deflect ball to retain possession
  • If GK in middle touches ball then player who lost possession rotates into middle
  • GK stays in if megged or conceeds 10 clear passes
  • Initially 2 touch (can play in 1)

Progression(s)

  • Hands (Pass by throwing)
  • 2 touch passing (must take)
  • 1 touch passing
  • 1 touch-2 touch alternate passing

Technical Activation (20 mins)

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • 2 goals set up using mannequins or poles
  • 1 GK working with 2 feeders (1 opposite each goal)

Instructions/Explanations:

  • GK takes pass from one feeder, controls and plays back
  • GK then readjusts and drops into perpendicular goal to receive pass from feeder 2
  • This can be repeated 2 touch passing, 1 touch passing, volley and 1 touch pass, volleys and strikes from floor
  • Work for sets of 6 then rotate

Technical and Game Related Practice: Readjustments and Positioning (30 mins)

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • 3 different colour cones
  • 2 mannequins to represent attacking line (2 strikers to play through)

Instructions/Explanations:

  • Option 1 (Technical):
  • Central feeder calls colour- GK moves to that colour and readjusts deeper
  • GK receives pass from central feeder and can play to either CB (Shown diagram)
  • GK readjusts deep for low central feed
  • Work both sides

  • Option 2 (Technical):
  • GK offers and moves laterally to receive ball from either CB
  • GK then switches play to opposite CB (around) or can play through attacking line into CDM
  • Central feeder then calls colour for GK to move to before readjusting deep for volley
  • Work both sides

  • Option 3 (Game-Related):
  • GK moves to coloured cone then readjusts for central strike from floor (increased distance)
  • GK then distributes via roll/ throw to CB or CDM (Out of possession CBs would then become attacking wingers and CDM an opposition CAM; central feeder becomes #9)
  • From there player receiving can control causing GK to move and reposition for strike
  • Player can also then combine with other feeders to trigger small readjustments i.e. CAM playing 1-2 with #9 for strike or winger cutting back for #9 to strike

Coaching points/learning objectives

  • Feet light to floor to move and readjust quick (Pulsing movements when still)
  • Awareness of hand positions to be effective
  • Use of scanning to identify setting triggers i.e. ball shifting out of feet
  • Technical efficiency and decision making (with ball at feet and when handling)

Game Related Practice: Cutbacks/ Close Range Shotstopping (30 mins)

Set up/Organisation/Description:

  • 2 goals set up as shown 3-4m distance apart)
  • Gate (1 cone set centrally for each goal to represent CB)
  • 1x #9 positioned beside gate
  • 2x players edge of box (Replicating midfielders arriving late to edge of box or possibly inverted wingers)

Instructions/Explanations:

  • Ball starts with feeder between 2 goals
  • Feeder plays to #9 who can finish 1 touch in either goal
  • Edge of box midfielders then strike towards the opposite goal
  • Play every ball to a finish
  • #9 can vary movements i.e. running across cone to replicate near post run across CB or peel off and drift to back post area (blind side)
  • Edge of box midfielders can combine and link up with #9 on second feed as progression
  • Initial feed can also be varied i.e. under arm throw for headed finish

Coaching points/learning objectives

  • Do not cheat/ over commit on initial position at near post - increased movement required and less reaction time to make a save if ball is cut back/ squared
  • Pulsing ready to move on balls of feet
  • Importance of scanning pre and post feed; location of #9 will determine feetwork used by GK i.e. front post run cross under step better to square up to strike and maintain depth for reaction time/ back post run will require fast movement to get across goal
  • Set upon triggers (even if out of position- better chance to make save); hands in front of body ready to move and react
  • Track second feed across goal (equivalent of ball being squared)- deflected ball may direct to your goal
  • Technical efficiency and decision making (attack cross or drop off to increase reaction time?)
