Practice 1 (25 mins)

Objective: Work on various techniques on how to defend in a 1v1 situation.

Set up: Set up as many stations as needed, as shown. Progress from exercise 1 to exercise 2.

Instructions: Exercise 1, the defender comes to the player on the ball, receives a pass (passes back) and then backpedals back to the start, in a defensive stance. Switch roles, make it competitive and be creative with the ball-work/passing. Exercise 2, the attacking player dribbles toward the defender and the defender backpedals in a defensive stance. Do the same thing, just reverse roles. After a few reps, introduce standing tackles.

Key words: Keep your eyes on the ball, stay balanced in a "surfing" position, show one direction or the other.

Guided Questions: 1. Why do we need to stay balanced? 2. How do we decide which side to show? 3. When do we "stab" or tackle the ball?

Answers: 1.In order to stay mobile and react to the attackers moves. 2. We decide based on space, support and the where the goal is. 3. When there's a bad touch or when the ball gets away from the attacker.

Set up: Set up as shown, move on once there's understanding, and switch roles after every turn. The defender plays the ball to the attacker and the 1v1 or 2v2 begins. Once the defender has regained the ball or the attacker has scored, the game is over. Keep score and make it competitive.

Key words: Keep your eyes on the ball, stay balanced in a "surfing" position, show one direction or the other. Communicate, who's pressure and who's support.

Guided Questions: 1.Why do we need to stay balanced? 2. How do we decide which side to show? 3. Who pressures the ball?

Answers: 1.In order to stay mobile and react to the attackers move. 2. We decide based on space, support and the where the goal is. 3. The player closest to the ball.
