Learning Objectives

Technical Technical
~ Body shape of defenders in accordance to ball position, always have body open to see the attackers and the ball ~~ Defending (possibly 1v1) when to tackle?, when to jockey? etc
Technical Tactical
~ Defending shape of the Yellows/Defending team ~~ Players to understand when to press and if they press how does the rest of the team react to cover spaces ~~ The two holding midfielders for yellow understanding their role and correctly deciding when to hold their shape and when to drop in and become a false fullback.
Technical Physical
~ The attacking team (Blue) physical output will be larger than the defending team as they will constantly be trying to find space and attack the final third. The defending team will look to hold shape and be disciplined.

Specific (8v7) (10 mins)

Organization and Instructions

  • The practice sets up in a 8 v 7 format (incl GKs) Yellow/Defending team will have the overload.
  • The Yellow/Defending team will set up in a (1) 4 - 2 - 1 (From a 4-2-3-1)
  • The Blue/Attacking team will set up in a 1 - 1 - 2 - 3 (From a 4-3-3)

How it Works

Blues/Attackers (Managed)

The ball will always start with the 1 CB, from either side of the center circle to mimic different passing angles.

The Blue/Attacking team will play toward the large goal on the goal line.

The Blues/Attackers may look to make penetrative passes into wide areas for one of the midfielders to support and create an overload. This will hopefully make it harder to defend to align with the topic.

Yellows/Defenders (Coached)

When the Yellows/Defending team is out of possession if one full-back goes high and presses the Blue winger, can the LCB shuffle across in between the front post & edge of 18-yard box, the RCB shuffles across in between the center of the goal and the front post, and the RB will tuck in to the back post. (Example for is the LB jumps)

Another possibility may be the midfielder closest to the fullback slots in and now becomes a 'false fullback' and covers the space left behind. The second midfielder will then shuffle and become a single pivot.

When the Yellows/Defenders win possession they will look to score in the mini goals (these represent the 2 wide players in a 4 - 2 - 3 - 1 system. The defending team will have 7 seconds to score a goal before the ball returns in possession of the blue team.

Timings & Blocks

Coaching Points

- Emphasize the role of the holding midfielders (Yellows) - Do they sit in front of the CB's? Or do they drop in as false full backs? All depends on the situation and where the ball is....

- If the ball is out touchline wide with the Blue's wingers - Where do the defending team need to be position wise?

- When to press and when to hold?

- Encourage the 10 to drop deeper, depending on how high the Blue's 4 plays.

- If the Blue's switch the ball with a diagonal/long pass, how does the shape effectively transition from one side to another?

- Body orientation, and body angles

What If's?

- RB/LB (Yellows) - If one jumps and pushes high to defend the Blue wide player? Either the two CB's will tuck in and the opposite full back will tuck in in line with the back post, or depending on the oppositions formation/positioning, one of the holding midfielders may drop in to become a false fullback

- ST (Blue) - If the striker keeps dropping into the midfield line? Does one of the CB's follow or do the CB's pass onto the holding midfielders? The holding midfielders may already be marking someone, so the CB stepping in with the ST leaves a big space in behind.

Organization and Instructions

  • The practice sets up in a 9 v 9 format (incl GKs)

When the ball goes out of play either on the touchline or over the dead ball line, the ball will always restart from the Blue teams GK. If Blue's take a shot and the Yellow keeper saves it they then get their chance to push on and score. Blues will always look to attack as yellows aim to defend in their final third.

Timings & Blocks

Coaching Points

- Re-emphasise the two holding midfielders roles when out of possession. How do they hold their shape?

- Are full backs jumping too early? Too late? How does the timing of their press effect everyone else?
