Week 3 - Defending principles - Timing of tackle + transition into attack
Timing of tackle is recognising when and how to tackle - What are the risks if you miss the ball? What are the rewards if you win the ball?
Coaches must encourage players to be brave but also cautious - think of the situation and the risk to reward
Players must recognise triggers such as: backwards pass, heavy touch, indecisiveness in order to make a good decision
Players must reflect - was that the right time to tackle? Yes or no? What could I do better next time?
Players will make mistakes and hopefully learn from them

Small sided 3v3 game (can be 2v2 or 4v4 if numbers need adapt - also add in-possession floater if uneven)
There will be a lot of actions during small sided games - lots of touches, passes, tackles etc
No goalkeepers
Allow free play and for the players to be creative
Coaches may choose to work with individual players here
Change teams every 5 minutes to allow players to work with new players
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Even sided game
ALL players must be in the opposition half (over white line) for a goal to count - encourages players (reds) to push high and allows counter-attack as space in behind - encourages opposite team (blues) to drop deep and must time tackles
Players cannot tackle in opposition half - encourages dropping deep to allow players to time tackle
Focus on delay, deny, cover as covered previously, now to add TIMING of tackle (see session description)
Feel free to add GKs or play first time finish only
Coaches to work with individual players - one coach per individual
See the guidance at the top of this page to understand why you are not seeing interactive Football/Soccer images.
Same game but a follow on from previous slide
When a player wins the ball from a tackle, if they cross the halfway line (and under 3 passes) a goal scored will count as two
The entire team will need to be over the halfway line for this to count
Players cannot tackle in opposition half - they must drop and reorganise into their half to tackle
Encourages a fast transition from defence to attack - high intensity, fun and will engage all players

King of the ring
Each player has a football which they must protect (shield, encourage skills, be brave in-possession)
Players must tackle each other in order to score points - one point if the tackle results in the ball going out of the zone - score system important to set focus on tackling
Set-up area (red cones in diagram) where players must complete a challenge to then join back in the game (kick-ups, dribble through cones - up to coaches)
Decrease the size of the area as the game progresses - results in more tackles which is our focus
