Welsh Way Principles - Understand when and how to prevent opposition breaking lines
Objective - Minimise number of times opposition forwards receive the ball and scoring opportunities
Organisation
- Area size will be half pitch
- Pitch is split into 3 zones and tapered to support players to move into positions to defend the lines when ball is played into wide areas as well as protecting the middle
- 9v9
- Defending team formation will be 1-3-4-1 (1-3-4-3 in 11-a-side)
- Attacking Team will 1-2-4-2 (1-4-4-2 in 11 a side)
Explanation
- Multi Directional game with re-starts as per standard rules to ensure realism
- Goalkeeper for attacking (reds) team asked to vary distribution between defenders and wide players to provide opportunities for blues to practice topic
- Upon recovering possession, the blue team is allotted 10 seconds to transition and score or play the ball back the opposition's GK to encourage the blue team to attack quickly creating lots of opportunities to practice the topic
- Coaching Blues (Out of Possession Team) and Managing Reds (in Possession Team).
Challenges, Conditions and Targets
Challenge - can Blue defending team restrict amount of times ball played into red forwards and scoring opportunities are created
Condition - Opposition must attempt to break lines by going 'around' or 'through' (not over) to enable opportunities coach players how to 'defend the lines'
Target - Can reds break lines to pass ball into their forwards and score
Coaching Points
Fast pressure on the ball:- as ball being played forwards must 'recognise tigger' and consider angle of approach so swiftly press the inside shoulder of the receiving defender on the in possession (reds) team, applying immediate pressure and maintain it to make the pitch 'small' and minimise the opportunities to break lines and play forward .
- Equally if play is switched to the other defender for the in possession (reds) team the nearest 'ball side' midfielder will 'jump' to apply fast pressure
- If ball played to wide reds midfielders the blues wide midfielders must press the inside shoulder of play receiving/in possession to prevent them breaking lines and minimises opportunities for a switch of play
Protect the space in behind
- Stopping split passes - if play is switched and 'ball side' midfielder (blues) 'jumps' then forward (blues) drops back into a central area to prevent a diagonal pass into opposite midfielder
- If 'ball side' midfielder (blues) 'jumps' to press the ball, the 'offside' midfielder (blues) slides across and presses inside shoulder of 'ball side' (reds) midfielder
Leave Furthest Player
Offside Wide Midfielders leaves his opposite player and moves into central zone to ensure team shape is narrow and compact
Protecting the Middle - the three (blues) defenders 'narrow in' on the two red attackers maintaining a 3 v2 defensive overload to provide opportunities for 'spare' defender to 'step in' and prevent forward passes reach attackers or cover in the event that the attacking team (reds) break lines and successfully play ball into forwards
Wide CBs press inside shoulder of forwards to delay and 'force' them away from goal
