Description

This session focuses on moving the ball with a strong push pass.

Coaching points should be addressed throughout to ensure technique is correct.

  • Stand sideways to target.
  • Left shoulder pointing towards the target.
  • Ball at right foot (back foot).
  • Transfer weight from right to left foot.
  • Keep stick on ball.
  • Follow through to target.
For the 16 hit out practice, due to the pitch layout at UCS (tennis nets up) - you might need to run this activity with half of your group using the hockey D markings, while the other half do 4 v 3, then switch over.

Piggy in the Middle

SET UP

  • 3-5 players (as long as you have 1 player in the middle, you can have 1-2 players at either end).
  • Give players a defined space to play in.
  • Players at either end need to PUSH the ball to each other.
  • They can also pass side to side before trying to pass through the middle where the defender/piggy is.
  • Keep rotating the player in the middle.

SET UP

  • In pairs, stand opposite your partner.
  • Each player starts behind their base line.
  • The player with the ball is aiming to pass the ball beyond the 2 metre line furthest from them.
  • Their partner's aim is to try and meet the ball to trap it before it gets across the 2 metre line just in front of them.
  • Swap partners every few minutes.

16 Hit Out

SET UP

  • Set up player positions for a 16 with an overload for the team taking the hit out. Eg. 5 v 3 or 6 v 3 (add a high player for the overload team).
  • The aim for the team taking the hit out is to score in the mini goal.
  • The aim for the pressing team is to win possession and score in the main goal.
  • Depending on how much space you have, the mini goal can be at the 23, the halfway line, or between the two.
  • The team taking the hit out should be successful.

COACHING POINTS

  • Positions - where does the ball taker need his/her teammates? Wide, more than one option available, movement in the middle to break up the press.
  • Type of pass - accurate, ball pace, flat.
  • Feet and stick work - getting feet around and using a drag to pass to the right.
  • Press - centre forward in front of the ball. Where do you want the team with the ball to pass? Or more importantly, where don't you want them to pass?

PROGRESSION

  • Two side goals for the team taking the hit out, rather than one central goal.
  • Encourage the team to play the ball wide.
  • Increase success rate.

  • In defence - clear the ball wide.
