Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): 5v4 warm up

5v4 warm up (20 mins)

Organization:

30x60 yard grid

spare balls

flag target area/server

5v4+ 1 server

Instructions:

play 5 vs 4

bal begins with sever each time

Attacking team of five to stop the ball on the endline to score

defensive team of 4 to play into server bettween the flags to score

Coaching Points:

-forwards look to check into midfielders as soon as they recieve the ball to find pockets of space to combine with the midfielders to get forward and penetrate beyond the defensive block.

-midfielders off the ball to give support tuck in on the weaker side looking to run centrally and make runs through and in behind

-wider players to give width when the attack is building and avoid compactness in the central areas.

main theme phase 1 (20 mins)

Organization:

area as shown above but can be squeezed to half field, divided into two thirds of the field

5v4 +1 GK with sever in the flag gate and assistant ref to call off sides

spare balls

attacking team in white

defending team in blue

Instructions:

-server/target plays to the midfielders of the attacking team

-midfield players look to play into the forwards and continue their run to combine to score

players start in their third as shown above and midfield on the attacking team can only advance into the final third if they get the ball to a checking forward first

-defending team look to transition and play into the server for a point ifthey win the ball if they win the ball

Coaching Points:

penetration- midfielders look to play in the forwards as soon as they are on,Forwards check at angles into pockets of space when midfielders have their heads up to play forward.(visual cue)

support-midfielders off the ball look to support and get forward being avilible and moving into effective areas to penetrate.

width- wider forwards to give width when the attack is building on stronger side of play and on the weaker side looking to run centrally and make runs through and in behind defencive block

Main Theme phase 2 (20 mins)

Organization:

Instructions:

Mark 3 zones of play

ball canot skip a zone play must build up through

PG)ball may skip a zone but then be dropped back to central zone for play to continue

players are restricted to zones until the the ball advances in attack

Coaching Points:

-take advantage of numbers up opertunities in final third and spped of play must increase the closer pressure gets to the goal.

-in middle third speed of play must increase as numbers are equal

-to look for early forward ball and support it by increasing options of mobility as quickly as pssible is key

- as play develops look to identify how, where & when do the players support in each third.
