Flank Play 3(4) v 1 to 2v1 on Width (20 mins)

Session Topic: Attacking Principles

Attacking on the flank, 2v1 penetration concepts

Stage: Stage 3

Set Up:

Half of 9v9 field (Scale to age and level of play) Two outside channels, mini goals, balls, pinis, cones

Time:

20 mins (30 sec work to 30 sec rest)

Organization:

Drill starts by pass into the box. They look to possess for a set number of passes (3 - 6) before playing the ball out wide to the 7 or 11. Player that plays the ball out wide then makes a support run into the box to play a 2v1 with that player down the width. Once the ball is played in the other two defenders can now step on the field. The Defender playing in the 2v1 cannot leave the box until the ball goes out of the box. Outside defender not involved in the 2v1 can track down runs that the central blue players are making.

Coaching Points:

Execute the overlap run to create a 2v1 on the width. Player recieving ball (#7 or #11) dribbles centrally to help open up angle for overlapping player

Recognize what the defender is giving them (Penetration on the dribble or pass)

Utilize the outside of the foot pass

Utilize good triangles in the middle of the field to keep possession (Patience in possession)

Crossing ball should be low and struck with laces at an angle away from the keeper

Timing of runs (don't arrive early or to late)

Near post run should be in front of keeper and should be first run in

PK Spot run should be second run in

Back post run should be last run in

Progressions:

Defender plays the ball out

Move to 4 v 2 in the central box
