Defending 3rd

In Possession in the Defending 3rd:

Notice first:

The field is divided in thirds. Defending, Midfield and Attacking 3rds. You will also notice that the LB & RB have a channel and is cut in 4 zones.

When in possession of the ball the LB and RB will get wide in their zone. The CB's will spread (move) in their zone. The CB that is not on the ball will drop to give support to the CB that is on the ball.

One CM will drop in to pick the ball up (Half turn, outside/inside turns; these turns need to be mastered) on the half turn and will look to start the attack.

Important Notes:

-Always be at angle. If the angle is not there because of a defending players covering the passing lane then move to another area of your zone to create that angle pass.

-CB's in beginning of the build up need to be aware of the LB & RB position and should look to pass there first unless the CM is open and has space to attack. IT COMES DOWN TO DECISION MAKING.

- The wingers should be wide still to make the field big (This makes it difficult for the opponent to defend) and remember if areas are defended by the opponent you just need to move around in your zone to create a passing lane.

-You'll notice that the LB/RB are in zone 1 and the wingers are in zone 2. This is to give support that is close and still spread out enough to give space for combination plays.

Midfield 3rd

In Possession in the Midfield 3rd:

Notice:

Continuing from the defending 3rd, the CB's are now pushing forward in their areas to continue to give support. The CM's are also pushing forward to create distance and space for a pass.

You'll also notice that now the LB & RB have pushed up to zone 2 and the wingers zone 3. This gives the same support but now we are moving further up the field.

You'll also notice that the forward shifts into one side of the area to give support to the RW and the CAM is giving support to the LW.

You'll also notice that that ALL 4 areas are occupied. This gives our team passing lanes and angles that will allow our team to successfully do combination passes.

Important Notes:

-Being AWARE of your opponent and surroundings is a critical part of the build up.

-Focus and being aware of your teammates movements will tell you where you should position yourself.

-DECISION MAKING is on YOU. You must take and make decisions all the time.

Attacking 3rd

In Possession in the Attacking 3rd:

Notice:

You'll notice that now the CB's are taking the space that was left from the CM's. This is to give support (in footballing terminology "pushing the line up")

You'll also notice that the LB & RB are now in zone 3 and that the wingers have now come inside (the oval shaded area), this now allows our team to look for combination plays (1-2 or wall pass) for the LB  & RB to put a cross in the box.

OR

This will give the CB more options to pass the ball forward (INSTEAD of sideways which does not make us dangerous)

You'll notice that all areas are taken up

You'll notice that players DO NOT enter other areas (EXCEPT for the CAM he free roams the field to give support and add numerical advantage in certain parts of the field)

Important Notes:

- As a player you need to be comfortbale in following instructions.

- Each position has a ROLE and a RESPONSIBILITY

- ROLE- is your position on the field. Do not think that because I am a LB that I will never be in a position of the CM or Winger. All players on the field have a set role but you are not limited to that role only so understanding all roles on the field is important because this will give you advantage in your positioning---- which leads to responsibility.

-Responsibility- is to be responsible (understanding of your role) of your role. A LB/RB have different responsibility then a CM or CAM.

-There are 4 moments. 1. In possession, 2. off possession, 3. regain possession, 4.loss of possession.

- Your role and responsibility is worked in practice IF you do not understand your role and responsibility please contact your coach to have a clear communication.
