Challenges, Conditions or Targets:

CHALLENGES:

  • Can the forwards combine with each other?
  • Can the outside support players play one touch combinations to either the forwards or each other?
  • Can the forwards make diagonal runs to draw CBs out of position to either create a shooting opportunity for the forward with the ball at his feet or receive the through ball?
  • Can forwards use one touch combinations?
  • Can forwards use wide supporting players to change point of attack?
  • Can GKs provide quick and accurate GK distribution?
  • Can forwards time their runs to remain onside and to either get through balls or drag CBs out of position?
  • Can forwards make good complimentary runs to create space? One checking short, one staying long.

Phase 2 (10 mins)

Welsh Way Principles Final Third:

Understand when and how to combine, create and finish in the attacking third of the pitch

  • Width and Depth
  • Risk taking
  • Final pass
  • Finishing

Adaptations (Progressions & Regressions): BLUES (in possession-coached)

  • Both blue forwards drop into free zone (shaded), need good checking in movements to create space so other forward can make a run in behind
  • Blue Forwards should constantly be looking for 1v1 situations and find shooting opportunities.
  • Blue forwards should look to make direct cross-over runs (diagonal runs) aided by quick combinations
  • Blue forwards should look to draw CBs out with quick combinations and get in behind
  • At all times blue forwards should be looking to be a threat and take defenders on 1v1

Reds (out of possession-managed)

  • Protect the middle
  • Force wide
  • Minimize box entries
  • Stop crosses
  • Defend the box
  • Earn a point every time ball is won in final third

PROGRESSIONS

  • Remove free play zone
  • Require one touch from support players

 COACHING POINTS:

  • Change point of attack using the wide supporting players
  • Quick and accurate GK distribution into forwards
  • Complimentary forward runs off the ball to create space
  • Quick counter attacking to exploit space in transition
  • Forwards should be looking to get in 1v1 situations and find shooting opportunities

  • Blue forwards should look to draw CBs out with quick combinations and get in behind
  • At all times blue forwards should be looking to be a threat and take defenders on 1v1
  • Blue forwards should constantly be looking for 1v1 situations and find shooting opportunities.
  • Blue forwards should look to make direct cross-over runs (diagonal runs) aided by quick combinations
  • Blue forwards should look to use what they learned in the last segment of session and either a) have one forward drop deep to collect b) have both drop deep and the forward who doesn't receive ball makes a complimentary run to either open up space for the player on the ball or get ball.
