Drill Start - Defensive Shape (25 mins)

Organisation

Drill- Half pitch.

GK, 4 Blue Defenders & Midfielder vs 3 Red attackers & 1 Red Midfielder.

3 cone gates with 3 Blue Midfielders to receive.

1 server (opposition GK).

Coloured cones on touchline to act as guides.

Key Factors

The drill starts with the balls on the half-way line with the server.

The objective for Blue team is to score by passing through either of the gates to their teammates, or they can score 2 points by dribbling through the gates themselves.

The defending Red team must try to stop the Blue team by putting the ball out of play or winning possession and scoring WITHIN 6 SECONDS, both of which restarts play from the server.

Blue's Defensive Shape

GK stands in-between the 6 yard box & penalty spot.

Defenders set up in a narrow defensive shape (within width of penalty area in a game realistic depth) as shown, in-line with blue cones.

Midfielder positions himself ahead of the defenders. in-line with yellow cones.

Defenders and attackers positions aided by use of coloured cones on both touch lines.

The ball is played to the goalkeeper from the server.  The defenders shadow/protect the ball until the GK receives it safely.

Drill GK - Attacking Shape (25 mins)

Attacking Shape

Upon the goalkeeper receiving the ball, the 4 blue defenders will transition from the flat setup to an attacking style, as shown. MAKE THE PITCH AS BIG AS POSSIBLE.

1. The CBs & FBs will split, keeping their eye on the ball.

2. CB move wide to the corners of the 18 yard area, looking to receive directly from the GK.

3. The 2 FBs move as wide as possible (hugging the touchlines) and push higher up the field, in-line with the red cones to break the line of the opposition.

4. CBs & FBs keep an open body shape so they can see 3 corners of the pitch. (Coach ensures he is specific with instructions not vague, e.g. get wide, Where? When? How? Who? What? Why?).

5. CM maintains higher position in-line with or beyond the yellow cones to occupy the Red CM and use sharp movements to provide an option for a pass.

Mid Block (25 mins)

PROBLEM 1 - Reds Mid Block (Shown).

1. When GK receives, he passes to a CB and follows his pass to create an option for a return pass.

2. Reds allow passes out to a CB & hold their line on the red cones. They slide as unit to the strong side of the pitch narrow and compact, trying to push the Blues towards the near-side touchline. They engage Blues as they try to break their defensive line.

How do the Blues escape?

- DRAW REDS IN BEFORE PASSING/TIMING OF THE PASS

- Quick 1-2 between CB & FB.

- FB pushes down the line to take a Red and create space. Can a ball be played through to the FB?

- Switch of play via GK to other CB (who maintains position), then on to the opposite FB.

- Can the FBs come in off the line into the 1/2 spaces to provide angles for a pass?

- Ball over the top or through the gaps between the Reds to the CM who uses explosive movements to get away from his marker.   Can he take his marker away then come short for a pass.  Can the CM then link up with the FBs or pass/dribble through a gate?

High Press & Corner Serve (25 mins)

PROBLEM 2 - Reds high press from the blue cones (as they see fit initially. Allow for mistakes).

Blues need to react off Red press and create space to play out of defence.

PROBLEM 3 - Variety of Serves

Server must serve into the corners to turn FBs and ensure realism.

FB must scan both shoulders as he retrieves the ball to look for the opposition press and for passing options.

When the serve is into the corner the Reds can press as a unit to try to pin the Blues into the corner, cut off passing lanes and gain possession.

- GK must show for the ball immediately.

- Nearest CB can rotate with the FB and provide and out-ball down the line.  Do not block the line of pass to the GK & invite pressure.

- Furthest CB moves to provide a passing option if possible and also defensive cover should the ball be lost.

- Opposite FB maintains his wide postion for the switch of play. Can he provide a passing option?

- If GK gets possession can the opposite CB & FB provide options for a pass?

- CM occupies the opposition CM higher and uses movement to provide passing options.  Can he take his marker away then come short for a pass.

Can the Blues create angles for a pass to escape the Reds' press?

11v11 (20 mins)

Organisation

3/4 pitch with Blue attacking end tapered off from the half-way line as shown.

Blues formation - 4-3-3 (Remove 2 wide attackers for SSG to create a 4-3-1)

SSG GK Attack (20 mins)

SSG: 9v9 - Shape when Blue GK has the ball.  Blues playing offside.

Blues' Attacking Formation - MAKE THE PITCH AS BIG AS POSSIBLE

Upon the GK receiving the ball, the 4 blue defenders will transition from the flat defensive setup to an attacking style, as shown.

GK moves forward with the ball using the penalty area as appropriate.

The CBs & FBs split keeping their eyes on the ball.

CB move wide to the corners of the 18 yard area, looking to receive directly from the GK.

2 FBs move higher & to the touchline, in-line with the red cones to break the line of the opposition.

CBs & FBs keep an open body shape so they can see 3 corners of the pitch.

DM splits the Reds' CFs to to allow CBs more space, provide an option for the GK and to provide defensive cover in transition.

2 CMs in-line with yellow cones, in left & right central channels, (1/2 spaces) up against Red CMs.

CF in opposite half, providing depth. CF cannot leave that half.

Reds' Defensive Formation - (Narrower than Blues)

CBs marking Blue CF in opposite half. CBs cannot leave that half.

CFs retreat to red cones & midfield to the yellow cones, making the pitch narrow and compact.

Blue team (Coaching)

Blues' focus is on build-up play from the back and continuing the work from the Drill.

GK uses his area to best effect. GK takes goal-kicks from central position to disguise the side that the ball is going to be passed.

After the ball is played from the GK, one of the CMs #8 and #10 can drop in alongside the deep lyer #6 to find pockets of space while the other does the same higher up. They can also stay together operating in higher positions. Their shape should change in and out of possession.

The #9 & Red CBs are restricted to the opposite half ans cannot leave that half.

When attacking or Red GK has the ball, Blue defense narrows within the width of the penalty area and pushes up to at least the blue cone to play offside.

Red Team (Managing)

Condition - Reds must score within 6 seconds or play restarts from the Blue GK. This will allow the Blues to regain the ball quickly and start playing from the back with the GK once more.
