Set Up:Max 8Wx10L Adjust size based on ability of the players
Organization: 3vs1 play must be seen as a game and not as a drill, exercise or an activity to keep players busy. 3vs1 allows players to become comfortable on the ball with minimal pressure to make decisions. Each touch on the ball encourages players to make decisions because each time it is a different problem to solve as there is pressure from the defender.
Good Teachers of the game will be able to:
1. Have players recognize it is a game realisitc situation.
2. Provide players with scenerios where 3vs1 could take place in a game and relate it to training.
3. Observe, assess, correct and re-evaluate if and when play breaks down using the prinicples of play.
4. Incorporate a goal to increase intensity and provide a key element of a session which is direction.
Coaching Notes:
Success is:
1. Ability to be mobile and be in good positions...(See Session Plan: 3vs1, Possession with Transition)
2. Ability to make 30 consecutive passes
3. Ability to understand the difference between 'First Touch' & 'Touch Direction'...(See Session Plan: 3vs1, Passing)

Set Up: 24 yards by 8-10 yards wide
Organization: 2v1 in each box with a line or cones laid out to divide the grid in half. The objective of the game is that the team who receives the ball from the coach is attempting to get it into the opponents half which has 1 of their teammates vs 2 opponents. In the diagram team blue is attempting to get the ball into area (1) which has 1 Attacker vs 2 Defenders. The players in area (2) may dribble the ball and join into area (1) or they can pass the ball directly into their teammate. Both blue players can enter into zone 1 to create a 3v2. If the blue team is successful in getting the ball into that area they score by dribbling or passing it into teammate in the endzone. If the defending team wins possession of the ball they can attempt to score by getting the ball into the opponents endzone line via pass or dribble.
Conditions: The player in grid 2 can not enter the defending area of his/her team but must be ready for the potential counter attacking opportunity.
Coaching Points: Positive 1st touch, part of foot part of ball. Do I dribble? Do I pass? angle, distance and timing of support. Where are my friends? Where are my enemies? Pry and Probe, Play direct? Recognize the space identify how to create space. WIIMPS (Width, Improvisation, Individual transition, Mobility, Penetration, Support) Attacking team, make the field big Front:Back, Side:Side
