Description

Animated Guide to Help Academy Goalkeepers with Decision Making and Techniques to use in 1V1 Breach Scenarios.

This is a rough guide and not a one size fits all approach- The aim is for GKs to recognise triggers and distances which can help inform their choice of technique and decision how far/ where to engage or stay in a 1v1 scenario.

Useful Triggers to Engage:

  • Heavy touch by attacker
  • Loose Pass
  • Head of attacker going down to strike
  • Recovering defender cannot influence strike
  • Distance to goal

** These are covered in more detail in each example**

    Examples Include:

  • Forward receiving outside 18 with recovering defender
  • Forward receiving centrally between 12-18 yard
  • Forward receiving closer to goal than 12 yards
  • Angled 1v1 Scenarios

Forward Receives Outside Box with Recovering Defender

Instructions/Explanations:

  • If forward receives far from goal and defender is able to recover it is likely useful to drop off and create depth (Statistically dropping and using reaction to make save is most effective technique in this scenario)
  • This will allow defenders time to recover and put pressure on attack by forcing wide to narrow shooting angle, affecting shooting technique by pressuring defending or even blocking shot/ regaining possession
  • Depth will increase reaction time and allowing defender to recover will increase chances of making save
  • If defender is unable to recover you will need to change decision/ technique as the picture changes depending on distance of attacker/ angle of attacker/ control of ball at feet

Forward Breaches within 12 Yards of Goal

Instructions/Explanations:

  • If forward receives ball in 1v1 scenario and is within 12 yard range this is an emergency scenario
  • The odds are that forward will score in this situation but to give yourself the best possibility of making a save it is vital to engage and make as big a barrier as possible. If you are able to get very close to attacker i.e. he takes a loose touch and head goes down you may be able to use narrow block
  • If attacker controls well it is likely you will need to use spread technique to create a large barrier and block as much of goal as possible (Get down quick to avoid being megged at close range)
  • Small steps, hands in front of body and using feet to block low if required within bubble are vital in this scenario

Angled 1V1 Scenario

Instructions/Explanations:

  • In angled 1v1 scenario the narrow block technique is statistically most effective although if they are angled and you cannot get close to them i.e. ball under close control it may be better to stay and react
  • In angled scenarios the attacker has less of the goal to aim at than central and so there the narrow block will usually be sufficient to shut off attackers angle
  • Benefits of this shape are that you can get into this shape quickly and there is a solid barrier between legs to avoid being megged at close range
  • This technique is only useful if you can get close to the attacker i.e. the attacker is approaching your goal at an angle or you can get close to them as the get on the end of the through ball
  • If you use this shape too far away from the attacker then they will have a big portion of the goal to aim at

This session includes animated drill(s) Save Image: Football/Soccer Session Plan Drill (Colour): Forward Receives Inside Box 12-18 Yard Range Central Create Video:

Forward Receives Inside Box 12-18 Yard Range Central

Instructions/Explanations:

  • If Attacker is in 1v1 scenario in the box between 12-18 yards as a general rule of thumb it is most efficient to be roughly at your 6 yard line to be a barrier to as much of the goal as possible (If they are free to shoot with defender yards off)- The spread technique is statistically most effective in this scenario but is only useful if ball is tight to attackers feet; also risk of being megged whilst sliding into shape if attacker gets too close
  • If pass is loose or attacker takes poor touch may be able to dive at feet and smother
  • If touch is loose but cannot smother may be a trigger to engage and use narrow block technique
  • If defender is very tight and can affect shot it may be better to drop and use reactions to make save
