This session teaches players the basics of setting a trap.

Main Coaching Points:-Create Density: Vertical & Horizontal compactness-1st defender close at an angle to shape play: Make it predictable -Eliminate inside passing lanes: Force Wide-Bait play into trapping zones-Urgency to close at proper angles: Body Shape & Positioning -Cover defenders tight on all outlet passes

Group Game: Set the Trap (25 mins)




Game Objective: Force the play wide and press with numbers on sideline.

 Topic: Setting the Trap

Phase: Collective Defending

Problem: Opponents are advancing the ball of up the field

Who: 9,8,10,6 2, 3

Where: Attacking half

When: we lose the ball and they play out of the back

What: Collectively shifting to close the direct channel to the goal or prevent a SPOA: 1) Up the sideline. 2) Passing channel. 3) across the field.

Why: to recover the ball.

Layout: 30x40 2 targets or goals; three channels

Restrictions: 5v5+2 Two touch limit; 3 games at 6 minutes with 3 minute rest. 

Scoring: Trap recovery: 2 points Connect Out and score: 1 point. Attackers: break through trap: 2 points. One point to connect to yellow goalie.

Game: Regular game. Ball goes out, play out of back.

Coaching Points:  1) Team must collectively shift. 2) Close down channels to goal: the 8 or 10 sits in cover thus closing down penetrating passes. 3) The 2 or 3 closes down the line and force play to inside. 4) The 9 closes down the weak side. 5) Balance: the 6 and other mid move in front of their man. 6) Recover ball: connect out and SPOA.

Game Objective: Force the play to outside player and press with numbers.

Topic: Set the Trap

Phase: Collective Defend

Problem: Attacking team are advancing the ball up the field.

Who: 9,8,10,6 

Where: Attacking half 

When: we lose the ball and they play out of the back 

What: Collectively shift to close the direct channel to the middle man or prevent a SPOA with another outside guy. Closest man to ball pressures; Furtherest man balances; the other two cover the passing channels. 

Why: to recover the ball.

Layout: 25x25 pentagon. Each cone is 20-25 yards apart.

Restrictions: 6v4 Rondo; 12 rounds; 90 second rounds; 60 second rest; Switch players after three rounds. Two touch limit

Scoring: 2 points for trapping and connecting out to coach. Attacking team: 2 points for two consecutive passes; 3 point if connected through the middle man.

Game: Regular rondo game with the coach roaming around the outside of the pentagon. He is the target to connect out once the defense recovers the ball. 

Coaching Points:  1) Team must collectively shift. 2) Defender closest to ball goes to ball. Picks which side he will deny, thus forcing play to other side 3) Defender furthest from ball balances. 4) The other two cover the immediate passing channels. 5) Recover ball: connect out and SPOA.
