Zone Game (15 mins)
Set Up: Quarter field at Pine Glen split into three smaller horizontal zones. Two large goals.
Players: One goalkeeper in each goal. Divide remaining players into two teams of 8. Set up players as follows: two defenders in zone 1, three midfielders in zone 2, one striker in zone 3 (in example above, zones are allocated for red). Players are restricted to their zone.
Description: Players take part in a 7v7 game (two subs per team). Regular rules apply. Main condition is that players are restricted to their zones. Upon advancing the ball one zone up (eg. 1 to 2 or 2 to 3), ONE attacker is allowed entry into the next zone to create an overload (or even numbers in zone 3). Upon possession being lost, players must return back to their own zone.
Progression:
1. Passing or dribbling player enters next zone.
2. Any attacker can enter the next zone for the team in possession.
3. Allow two attackers to enter the next zone.
4. Allow two attackers and one defender to enter into next zone.
Questions: Who is in the best position to support in the next zone? How can we best support our teammates when moving up one zone? How can an overload help us?
