attacking wide areas in a 1-4-3-3 (30 mins)

Organisation:

  •  the game is played on a wide half-pitch from the end of the centre circle to the goal line
  • it's a 7v7 game with the attacking team in 1-3-3 resembling the attacking half of a 1-4-3-3 and the defending team in a 1-4-2 resembling the defensive shape of a 1-4-4-2 or a 1-4-2-3-1
  • the game starts with the red playing to the red 6 who has dropped out at an angle to receive a pass
  • throw-ins are in play but no corner kicks
  • IF WE SCORE FROM A WIDE AREA/CROSS GOAL IS WORTH 2

Explanation Phase

Learning phase:

  • coach in logical order, good viewing position to spot and identify coaching points. when stopping to do a coaching point, ask, show, effect all players starting with nearest to the ball, make sure the ball moves.

Coaching points:

  • when the ball starts with the red goalkeeper the red 6 shows for the ball at an angle and take appropriate touch based on pressure (scan, safe foot, back foot)
  • 8, 10 should play off the shoulder of their markers to find space beyond and between players to create penetrating forward passing lanes.
  • 11, 7 should look to play out wide in the highlighted zones when the ball is central or on their side, when the ball is in a crossing position the opposite winger should look to come inside like a second striker.
  • 9 should look to play as high as possible to create space for midfielders to play in. they should look to link with midfielders in buildup play.
  • as the ball progresses the reds should look to create 1v1 and 2v1 situations against the blue fullbacks.
  • when the ball is being delivered a focus on good times of movement and movements to creat space is important
  • support behind the ball from the red 6 is important as it allows the ball to be switched if there is no opportunity to go forward

implementation:

  • when play is stopped to highlight a coaching point recreated the same situation after you demonstrate the coaching point.
  • let both teams play to see if you can highlight the coaching point introduced in the learning phase with positive reinforcement
debrief:
  • split the group into both teams
  • ask the questions in a logical sequence 7 first
  • ask open-ended questions about the points used in the learning phases. how did you do that? and why?
  • ask for feedback
  • say well done
