Coaching Points:

Win 1st & 2nd balls in the air. Win 50/50 balls.

Speed of play needs to be quicker.

Trapping/Passing technique poor.

Tighter marking in the middle of the field.

Game management - there were times instead of just clearing the ball, we are trying to dribble it or pass out of the back with 5 minutes left. That is a time to just clear it. Think intelligently on how to close the game out with the win.

First Half Match Up

Good mixture of short and long balls up to the forwards. We did poorly with support play. We either 1.) didn't get forward as a team to help support the play up top or 2.) tried to turn and dribble instead of finding possibly the layoff or switch to the open player.

We need to keep possession for 6,7 passes to let our back line get over half way. This way, we have numbers to play with on our attacking half and if we do lose the ball we can put pressure immediately. If we force the play too fast, there is no time to get the team forward and now if we lose it, there is a big gap between lines. Between the midfield 4 and back 4.

Once we used creative passes and movement off the ball in front of the box, we scored.

Second Half Formation

Started the second half in a 1-4-3-3, the way we ended the first. The added pressure up top was not enough so to go for the win, 5 was removed, 11 & 7 were dropped to outside mids and a forward was added to create a 1-3-5-2. Added pressure and better combo plays/through balls lead us to a corner.

Hopefully we learned that at times, we need to take set pieces (corners, freekicks, etc.) fast to catch the other team in transition. We did that with the corner and got a good shot near post and scored 2-1.

To hold onto the win, we took a 9 off and added the 5 back to the game to stay strong in the back.

Better possession, keeping the ball with consecutive passes opened up the game. The more we keep it, the more the other team gets frustrated and tries to come get it - then we penetrate.

Second Half Match Up

Better job getting the ball to their half and keeping it there. Still can do better with connecting more passes and switching the play 3,4 times before we attack. Patience when we have the ball. If it gets too to be too much traffic, we just play it back and open up again.

A lot more through balls and diagonal balls to open the field up to a running game for our forwards and outside mids to make the other team turn and run towards their own goal. This pressure created our corner and ultimately the goal to win.

Attacking Principles

1.) Width (good)

2.) Depth/Support (poor)

3.) Mobility (poor)

4.) Penetration (above average)

5.) Creativity (average)

We always want to keep the width, but we always want to go forward. There were a few times that we chose to play the ball wide (a lot of times best option), but there was a better ball that could have been played through a passing channel in between their back four defenders.

Need to use wall passes, overlaps and third man runs more in order to find penetration behind their back defending line. Keeping possession and switching the ball not only tires your opponent, but it stretches them out and creates passing channels to penetrate and attack easier.

We are 3v4 up top so once the ball conects from 5-10-6-9 then finally the layoff to 8, we are a number low. Players running through the midfield can mak it 4v4 and 11 & 7 using crossing runs to confuse defnders could create space for the 6 running into or the 9 to spin off into.

Girls inside orange shaded area need to get up the field and help support. We need to get down the field. Once 11 plays it into the 9, it then becomes a 3v8. No options for the forward to keep the ball so what happened is she is forced to turn and dribble or we just lose the ball. Because we don't push forward and we are back, now the other team wins it and fills the space in the middle of the field where we are not located. This causes danger because now we have the other team with the ball coming at us in the middle of the field with no pressure - counter attacks against us.
