Keepaway Tourny (Warmup) (15 mins)

Organization:

10x10 grids as above. At least 6 grids are needed, add more based on numbers so all players can play at once. One ball and pinnie per grid.

Instructions:

Players play two 30 second rounds of keep away from the other player in the grid. Players count the number of times the other player is able to win the ball away. The player who had the ball taken the least wins and advances to the next division (1-6). The player who lost the ball the most times in division 1 then goes to division 6 to work their way back up. Play 12 rounds. Players ending in division 1 get to be attackers first in the next activity.

Coaching Points:

* Use of body/arms to shield the ball and feel for the defender

* Use of foot furthest from the defender to dribble the ball

* Side body angle to keep the ball as far away as possible

* Quick feet with the ball to beat other player 1v1

Progressions:

P1: If odd numbers, add in players for a 1v1v1 in division 1. Increase division 1 space into 15x15.

Attacking 2v1 Back to goal (30 mins)

Organization:

As above. Field is 45x35. Use big goals and goalkeepers in each goal. Four pugg goals on the sides for goalkeepers. Pile of all soccer balls in one corner with a line of attackers. Line of defenders by the opposite goal. One player from each team in the center of the area.

Instructions:

Teams play four minute rounds as attackers and defenders. Winner is the team with the most goals after both rounds. Play three games (6 rounds total). Attacker in the center motions for a ball to feet (hand) to start the activity. Attacker in the corner plays a ball to that players feet. On their first touch, the defender is live and can win the ball to counter attack to score for his team. The attacking player from the corner must make a overlapping run around the hold up player for the goal to count. The attacking players try to score for a point for their team. If either goalkeeper makes a save, they can score a addtional point for their team by using a windmill throw to score in any close pugg net, or a side winder punt to score in the far pugg goals for 2 points.

* Timing of run/turn to keep possession.

(Secondary coaching points)

Attacking 3v2 Back to goal (30 mins)

Organization:

As above. Field is 45x35 with big goals and goalkeepers. Four pugg nets set up as shown, approximately 10 yards from the endlines. Attacking players in two lines in the corners, defenders in two lines on either side of the goal. One player from each team in the center of the field.

Instructions:

Center attacking player (gray) uses his hand to show he wants the ball to feet to start the game. Attacker plays the ball to his feet and both attackers must make a overlapping run around the hold up player. Defender is live on hold up player's first touch. The other defender starts at the endline and can come support the defender already in the middle. Players play 2v1. If defenders win the ball, only the attacker who lost the ball can defend, the other two players switch lines after finishing. If the goalkeeper(s) make a save, they can use a windmill throw to the near goal for 1 point and a sidewinder punt to the far pugg goal for 2 points for their team. Teams play 4 minute rounds on both attack and defense. Team with most goals after both rounds wins.

Coaching Points:

* Give and go combinations to beat defenders

* Use to body/arms to shield the ball from defenders (hold up player)

* Use of width to beat defenders and create more space for attacker to turn

* When to turn/when to pass as hold up player

(Secondary learning outcomes)

* Goalkeepers: Technique of sidewinder/windmill throw

* Goalkeepers: Quick transition after save to counter attack with speed

* Defenders: Narrow or wide? Can we force them to face their own goal with the ball?

* Defenders: Communication on which way to 'direct' the attackers (angles of cover runs)
