The Build up: Possession
Set up:
2 15x15 boxes as seen.
Coach in the corner - with balls
6 Reds (Attacking team)
2 Blue (Defending team)
Activity Instruction:
- Play starts on one side. Creating an attacking shape of a 1 - 2 - 1 (diamond)
- Always starts with #1 representing a goalkeeper.
- #1, #4 and #5 must stay on the outside of the area but can move up and down there line to support.
- Looking to find #6 to then transfer the ball over to the #9.
- When that happens, Play continues on the other side and #6, #4 and #5 slide over to support.
- Blues (Defenders), are looking to win the ball back or apply pressure to force a mistake
Progressions:
- Allow the #4 and #5 to play forward into the #9 (easier)
- Add a pass limitation (more difficult)
Coaching Points:
- Creating a diamond shape in possession
- Quality of passing (weight and accuracy)
- Movement to support the player on the ball
- Forward passes when possible
- Reaction to win the ball back and regain possession

Building out through pressure
Set up:
- Use half a field (7v7, 9v9 or 11v11)
- Cone a build out line (Defenders must start behind this)
- Set up players in a formation (in this example we have a 2-3-1)
Activity Instruction:
- Ball starts from the GK. As soon as the next person receive the ball, 2 defenders go in to press.
- Red are looking to build up, playing through the pressure.
- Must play off the #9 at least once before scoring in either mini goal.
- Blue (Defenders) are trying to win the ball back and score
Progressions:
- Add/Takeaway defenders
Coaching Points:
- Coach different patterns. (Out to in/In to Out, Play Through the #6)- Passing Quality (weight, accuracy)
- Support around the ball
- Communication
- Can we find forward passes (Vertical/Diagonal)
- Can we use the GK?

Activity Instruction:
- Players with the ball, have a max of 4 touches on the ball. Control, dribble, drible, pass
- Looking to find a pass to an open player (someone without a ball)
- Players without the ball, should look to move into space, to SUPPORT a player on the ball
Rule:
- The ball + players are not allowed to stop moving
Progressions:
- Reduce max number of touches on the ball to 3 or 2? This will challenge speed of play.
