Matches - Arrival/end (20 mins)

Set Up

  • 1 ball on pitch and layout as shown in setup. Additional balls around the pitches for quick play? Coach has a few balls in hand ready to play?

Practice

  • Let the kids play football when they arrive and end their session. You don't need to coach at this age, let them play and have fun. Encourage and praise positive behavior. Read through the progressions for alternative match ideas to encourage fun, enjoyment, development and participation for all.

Progressions

  • Touch = goal amount. Every touch you take as an individual and team adds up, can you score to convert it into goals. 7 touches = 7 goals. If the other team touch the ball start again from 0.
  • Ball per player! - Each player or 2/3 per team hold a ball whilst playing. If someone kicks the ball out of play the coach shouts a player from the other team to drop the ball and restart play from where they are standing.
  • Scoring zone - The coach marks out the pitch to have a scoring zone, you can only score if you are in that area.
  • Flip out - flip the goals so the kids have to dribble past them, turn and shoot.
  • 2 goals or the line. 1 team attacks 2 goals trying to score, the other team has to dribble across the line. If you dribble over the line you must swap halves.
  • The team game - you win the game when everyone in your team has scored a goal.

Coaching Points

  • Lots of fun football! Keep it simple and fun
  • Ask the kids what rules they like and play that game!!
  • COACH !! SAFETY - Please ensure matches are safe at all times for players. Referee and monitor the match at all times. Praise positive behaviour, remind players of player of the day. If players continuously break boundaries intervene and/or speak to the coordinator for support.
