Overlapping Drill 2 x groups of 9 in 2 x grids 3 players at starting cone (bottom) 2 at top and a player at each of the 4 inside markers
The aim is to play a forward pass to the forward right (grid 1) or left player (grid 2) at the cone as they receive it what ever side the ball goes the player behind starts a overlapping run around behind the player at the top cone as they start the run the top 2 players play a 1 - 2 pass switch sides and the 2 in the 1 - 2 pass goes to the overlapping defender who receives it and plays into the players at the top cone who play the same going back the player that plays the initial first pass takes the overlapping defenders place
will do 5 minutes of play to the top right player same as number 1 in the grid then next 5 minutes to top left player shown in 2 in the diagram then last 5 minutes of players get to choose what side and make runs according to where the ball is played
this drill should give wing backs an idea on timing overlapping runs when to make them using improvisation depending on the scenario on the pitch which backs up the play and can get the team into better goal scoring positions and the players infield who receiving the ball the timing and weight of pass wide and seeing when the pass its on
should take around 20 mins all in including brief and coaching points
3 B's body shape ball control and ball speed are crucial in the drill so if they aren't being done right
intervene recreate and correct and encourage when its done well and when its being done well should almost be able to do it all 1 touch and get the overlapping player to time the run so he still onside before the ball is played into his stride

10 mins 2 v 1 using mini goals
25 x 15 grid defender in front of mini goal 10 yards out
2 x attackers central attacker with ball second attacker has to start from behind and create a overlapping run
central attacker starts the game by playing a 1 - 2 off the defender then the game is live
we are looking the central attacker to do 1 of 2 things either see the overlapping run and use it to create the opportunity or for the central attacker to improvise and use a step over or Zidane or other kind of skill to get past the defender to score
we want the over lapping player to time the run and come from behind using communication to let the central attacker to know he is coming and the option is there but let the central attacker make his own mind up using improvisation to get past the defender to score
change the defender every few mins and overlapping run from right side to left every other run
looking out for the 3 B's body shape ball speed ball control
is the timing of the over lapping run correct? if playing in the over lapping run was the weight of pass good?
if the central attacker creates the wide pass what is his next movement / body shape to create a 1 - 2 pass to create the goal scoring chance,
if the central attacker decide to go himself and produce a improvised skill
- is he in Control of the ball
- does he get his distances correct (skill to close or far away)
- does the central attacker use his body to protect the ball during the improvised skill?
areas to step in and correct possibly
- overlapping run to tight (use the full width to create more space) for the pass or create the 1 v 1 skill with more space
- weight of pass (too fast or to slow )
- improvised skill wrong for the situation or too early or late giving the defender more chance to win the ball

9 v 9 game 20 mins all in using principle of attack using Improvisation
3 - 3 - 2 formation
let them play first few mins
if ball keeps breaking down in the attacking half can we stop and explain why and how can do it better using improvisation in these aspets
- overlapping run?
- indidvual skill?
- communication
- body shape
- weight of pass
- ball control
- movement
- anticipation
step in bring the play back correct where they could do it better moving the ball and let them play
step in maybe 2 or 3 times in the 20 mins to correct in these aspects with maybe the 3rd time to show where they done it well and finish with success
should take around 20 min all in
Personal performance
i feel this group could work more on the topic so will take a extra stop than normal in the game to get my point across his session to get my coaching points across and ask them the questions what they should have done and how they should do it followed by the ripple affect how the play works out after using the improvisation then the next session i take the topic back to 2 - 3 stops not 3 - 4

Screen 1 warm up (10 mins)
warm up 10 mins
first 1 min no ball jog up and down cones to you get to the end and stride it back to the starting point (white cone) then continue until 1 min are up
next 1 min high knees on way to top cone and jog to bottom get to the end and stride back to starting cone
next 1 min heels same
next 1 min side shuffles
bring ball in to warm up
overflow players have a ball each at white cone pass and follow your pass 2 min dribbling with ball back to start at the end 2 min continuous
then pass forward same but forward sprint backward to previous cone then forward at each cone before receiving the next pass continue until 10 mins is up
set up along the side of pitch like picture to give space for the next part of the session to get set up
